Colorado State coach Jim McElwain has emerged as a leading candidate for the Florida vacancy, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports Sunday.

Information has been gathered on McElwain by Florida officials since the school announced two weeks ago that Will Muschamp would not return as coach, sources said. It is unclear how many other candidates may be involved. Sources said Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze was among those on Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley's radar, but McElwain's name may be at the top of the list.

Almost seems too smart of a hire it fits so well.

I'd hire him in a second; McElwain is the offensive, CEO type HC they need. Some good DCs on the market too, win-win.

Dammit Florida, you know you want to bring Joker back into the fold.

And McElwain would be a good hire.

frick that, don't really want. And I'm not buying it just yet, we still have to pay Muschamp 6 mil, then you have to think about McElwain's 7.5 buyout. Nah, not paying that for somebody who isn't a "splash" hire.

I would be happy with him.

Making Colorado St relevant again is a rather tall task and he did it.

I've read he has a $7.5 million buyout. Anybody know if that's correct? Also, isn't UF on the hook for $8.4 million for the current coaching staff? If all that's true, that would be $15.9 million before McElwain receives his first dollar from UF. That's steep.
