Honestly though they could have easily parked a safe distance and used the cop car PA system or a loudspeaker and asked the kid to follow his orders if he did not comply then maybe force should have been used. Different story if night but in plain daylight. This should have been handled differently.

Video just released tonight. Trying to avoid publicity. Let every eat some turkey and not talk about a kid shot.

Completely agree about the pulling up close part. The kid still pulled what appeared to be a gun on them, unfortunately.

That video looks terrible. Not sure how anyone can defend the cops approach/actions in this case.

It is. Did the cop hear it?

For now, the cops say they did not. We will see as the case unfolds. Sometimes they lie to cover their asses. Like they might say "I told him 3 times to drop his weapon." And then when the video comes out, it might be really clear they didn't do that at all.

According to the CNN report, they were adamant that the 911 operator did not relay this information. I agree that they should have been aware of this statement. Also, the 911 operator should have asked why the caller thought the gun was fake.

I would be adamant, too, after the police department's lawyer advised me how many millions that piece of information would cost the department.

CNN was adamant based on what they know right now. Did you watch the CNN video? They play exactly what the operator said to the police. She clearly says "he's waving a gun around". No mention of it possibly being fake. LINK

Ok. Wasn't sure that the dispatcher was recorded. Thanks.

Next question. They told him to "drop the weapon" and it's in his waist at this time? How do you drop it without pulling it out?

This is a great point. It was very fast and the video is a horrible quality, but I'm sure they never gave him an opportunity to drop the weapon. Nor did he have the opportunity to point it at them. "Drop the weapon" does not fit with that scene at all. I doubt the cop even said that.

But the press conference said he said it. Pretty sure. Will rewatch.

Yes. Police representative says "the officers ordered him to show his hands and drop his weapon."

As they're pulling up, he gets up from the table, pulls the "gun" out of his waistband and walks towards the cops. Again dumb arse games, gets you dumb arse prizes. He also doesn't look like a child. It ain't a 5 year old playing with a cap gun here.

People applying this kind of responsibility and dismissiveness to the decision making of a 12 yr old child v an adult police officer are pretty disgusting and are major contributors to the current cop problem we have in this country.

No no no then you have a person with a gun running away wanting to be a hero & start shooting people you don't know if it's a real gun you have to assess and defuse & secure the situation as quickly as possible. they could have parked 1000 ft away & they could have put a sharpshooter on a rooftop & when the kid pulled out the gun & pointed at people like he was doing then the sharpshooter would have put a 308 in his chest or head & he would still be dead.
Night vs day yeah big diff daytime you have a hell of a lot of more potential victims out & about. The 911 caller should have went & took the gun away coward.
It's easy to sit here & be the armchair qb. The scenarios you people are coming up with are the same as the idiots in Cleveland & ferguson it's based on after the fact you have all the information. Yes the caller said it my be a toy 50:50 not good odds Russian roulett is 1:6 which game will you play? That cop had no idea what he was facing they blew in there with disregard for their lives to quell a dangerous situation.
Remember columbine? How long did those police wait? it was over 4 hours till they got to the last dead kids, those 2 nut jobs walked around killing people for an hour before they killed themselves. This 12 yo kid could have become an active shooter

Next you will see thugs paint the ends of their glocks with orange paint & the idiots of the world will say it's ok folks it's just a toy! Then BANG! One more dead son father mother brother etc..
All life is valuable was this handled perfectly no there is a dead kid not the outcome anyone wants but given the circumstances you cannot risk a crazed gunman with a death wish running around on a Saturday popping people in Cleveland.

Yes, the toy gun looks real, but this one could have definitely been handled different.

Dudes parents should have taught him not to go around pointing guns at people. Especially cops.

Cop was right in my opinion.

Haven't completely made up mind on this one yet BUT for those decrying the time between arrival and shooting:

You do understand that the video is time lapse? Right? It isn't an accurate time representation of what happened. They need to determine the time between clips and slow it down to the appropriate speed. It will just be clips but at least then you can get a feel for the speed of the event.
