That looks just like a real gun. A "toy" pellet gun? Are pellet guns toys? I'm confused.

Pellet guns were toys when I was a kid. I had one that looked just like a 9mm. Never had an orange tip for me to remove.

I knew not to carry it to school, but I carried it a lot of other places like baseball parks, playgrounds, in the woods and I walked down the street with it.

Never considered a cop might shoot me dead because a concerned citizen called in about me having a gun.

Maybe it's where people are from. In rural Mississippi that's a toy.

I wouldn't think a 12 year old would consider the possibility of being killed. This is a sad situation, but damn that gun looks real. The 911 operator should have relayed the information about the caller saying it was probably fake, but what if the caller was wrong? What if it was a real gun? Is the cop suppose to let someone point a gun at them?

Did you stand on a sidewalk acting gangsta, pull it out of your pants and point it to strangers?

At the same time I think we have to realize that racial prejudice is not always a conscious decision. The fact that it was a black kid probably did factor into it even if it was only a subconscious perception based on stereotype, that cop's personal experiences and feelings, etc.

This board will never admit this. They only judge facts, and they are unbiased robots that only judge actions and have no preconceived judgements about people.

It's so asisine of them.

I've been saying it throughout all of these shootings. Our implicit and explicit perceptions and attitudes About people govern our world, and play a big role in how we treat others. If we perceive others to be "less than", "criminal", etc, then we will most likely as so.

It's a toy when a white kid has it. Maybe?

We would go to the school in Burke Centre, Virginia and 20 of us would run around on top of the school having "wars." I had an "M-16." It made a cool sound when you pulled the trigger.

But it was a white suburb. So... No one even called the cops.

This is a very sad situation. I wish this would have been the Michael Brown case. But I'll wait for more details to come out to pass before j pass more judgement

Did you ever pull it on a cop? Did you ever go up to random strangers who didn't know it was fake and point it at them?

There may not be anymore details. We have video. People are going to see what they want to see and decide for themselves. There will be discrepancies in what people see.

No.

Yea. I guess. There were always people around when we were playing war. Walking trails, bike paths and so on and so forth. Police never were called on us.

But that was back before everyone lost their mind watching 24 hour news and we didn't see a bogeyman in every public situation.

Lesson to learn from this- if you pull a gun (real or fake) on a cop, you're gonna get shot.

Just like if you rob a liquor store and then choose to fight the police officer called in to respond, you're gonna get shot

Why people 1. Don't already know these things and 2. Try to blame the police for them is beyond me

Yes. Good post. Police shoot almost as many people holding BB/pellet guns in a year as police are shot by criminals. Excellent point to bring up.

Also, I'd like to point out that if you have a loved one who is mentally unstable, do not call the police then either. They will kill their arse. And don't blame police. Sometimes to save a crazy person, you have to kill their arse.

Also, if you have an issue with a dog, do not call the police. They will kill their arse.

In short, when things die down and you need to file an insurance report, then and only then should you call the police.

The shooting was captured on surveillance video, but authorities speaking at a news conference on Monday said they didn’t know when the footage would be released to the public. They also disclosed that a Cleveland grand jury will decide whether or not to indict the police officer who fatally shot Rice.

Really? We're going to go through this shite again? Just another excuse for them to loot and destroy.

So you're ok with this already?

Is there any hypothetical situation where the use of police force could be inappropriate?

Protesting is fine, looting and setting things on fire is not.

I'd assume you'd call for an ambulance first?

Yeah well when I went to school and we got mad at someone we could say, "I'm gonna kill you" and not have the cops called in too.

Course back then queers didn't walk the streets protesting and asking for weddings either.

A guy in high school got suspended (2003) for aiming their finger, pointing and making a gun sound at another student
