yup...my department has something that is used to prevent the issue.

This brings back up the Lt. Colonel of the LA State Police that (recently) tried to get some legislation passed to get his money for retirement

Because he entered the drop program too early and then got a substantial pay boost afterwards, but could not claim it

After the abuses they cut over over time down to nothing.

Extra duty was also hard to come by after the abuses came to the media's attention.

Pretty sure he's a member of the DWI task force. There's 3 other members who make over $100k. Can you say RACKET?

a lot of pension plan multipliers are for the best earnings in the last X of X years, that part isn't uncommon, but a cop getting a hundred grand a year lifetime pension kind of reeks

When they cut government employees pensions and water down their benefits they always exempt law enforcement. So, basically they can start at 22 and retire at 47 with $70k+ a year and then work a 2nd job if they want to make more money on top of that.

That's way better retirements than most engineers, software programmers, and lawyers get who work for state and local governments.

Not that i really have a problem with paying them well. The real problem is why don't they hire better people.

It's crazy that OT is part of that computation because you kind of pick up the benefit of that on the front end with that whole time and a half thing.

Agreed. If one is going to pay (potentially) actual millions to a single retired police officer, I better be getting someone top notch while he's still on the job.

unfortunately cops seem to be more of a liability to the government than an asset, they are a walking lawsuit, and IMO the quals for becoming a cop are so minimal that the comp and pension is ridiculous(acknowledging that some upper echelon cops brought in as upper mgmt. have a little more on their resumes)

DROP has nothing to do with this situation. DROP has nothing to do with the amount of retirement you get. When you elect into it, you stop earning years. Your retirement is calculated and paid into a DROP account(this is like a savings account). Once you are out of it(you can stay in it for up to 5 years), you receive the money from the account and start receiving your monthly retirement. DROP actually saves money due to number of years not increasing(this keeps your retirement amount from going up, unless maxed), and less money the government has to put into retirement. Also, most of these retirement systems have a penalty for drawing before a certain age. I'm not looking up this one though.

This. I am considering SULC and a second career as a prosecutor when I leave.

Except that when person who has elected to take DROP comes back to work they block someone else from working in the system. I am not a fan of DROP for that reason. Sure, it is only for up to five years, but that is five years where investment in the employee does not happen. The people taking DROP are lame ducks in the government workforce.

I only envision the extremes where either too many people will take DROP over an extended period of time and not save the money it is intended to save, or too many people will take it too early in their careers and be screwed 30 years down the road due to piss poor money management. Too many people in the second scenario will lead to a change in how the program operates and screw over the future generations.

Plus, in many cases earned but unused sick time can be used in the calculations towards DROP.

Disclosure- I am young and am not counting on Social Security to exist when I reach retirement age. Yes, I realize that SS and government pensions are not the same but I believe that the younger generations will get screwed over one way or another.
