rich gannon was a journeyman/backup until he landed with the raiders late in his career and became one of the best quarterbacks in football for a few seasons.

which, if any, qb do you see this happening to?

Actually Mallett is an interesting choice here, although I wouldn't really consider him a journeyman at this point. If the Texans draft a top QB and Mallett goes to another team and does it, then yeah. Brett Farve may be a better comparison for Mallett if he stays and does it with the Texans (career path-wide). Short backup role with another team before taking over.
