Why do y'all go to the Midwest to hunt?

I don't hunt big game so excuse my ignorance. I've been hearing a lot of friends and coworkers from Louisiana go up to Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois for big game hunting. A lot of them are looking for white tail which is a species we have down here. Why do y'all go up there? I thought Louisiana and Mississippi were plentiful with large game? Are there larger numbers ? Better trophy bucks? Less people to deal with? Cheaper leases and clubs? Obviously for game like elk and whatever else you gotta go further like Montana so I get that.

Higher chance at really big deer. 150-180" deer are a lot less common around certain areas of LA, MS, AL. The places that do have them are usually private.
If I had the expendable income I would do it. But I don't, so I hold out hope that I can get lucky one of these days... Until then, the most I can hope for is a decent 130-140 class deer which is still pretty damn good. To each his own.

Same reason people go to Mexico for billfish. Change of scenery, less pressure, better opportunity, bigger animals.

Bigger bucks with better racks.
Different scenery
More patterned movements compared to my area in E. TX
Chance to travel
Friends and Family
Getting away is not the same as stay and play
Hunting isn't all about the collection of meat similar to a trip to the grocery store.

personally i like the "trip". Its a get away with the guys, a vacation without shooping and going to attractions. Hunt, cook, drink a beer.. repeat. And see new places, and bigger deer.

Just the experience. Missouri state law is 1 buck, 1 doe with option to buy more doe tags. Wish they adopted something similar here in LA. After about 10 years, you would see a HUGE increase in quality deer.

Illinois allows residents to shoot 2 bucks and OOS get 1 buck tag. You can buy more doe tags.
LDWF just says "hey go shoot any deer you'd like to"

A lot of people in LA and MS have a, "if it's brown, it's down," mentality. Many bucks don't have the chance to grow to a trophy size.
There are also larger land owners in the Midwest...at least compared to LA. In Iberville, there are a lot of 10-40 acre land owners that take multiple deer and don't really communicate with other land owners about it.
Thus, it's harder (in general) to manage a herd.
And as mentioned, we have relaxed management regulations compared to most places. Whether that's good or bad is up for debate...but it's the truth.

"just go load the back of your truck with as many 4 and 6pt deer as you can fit" Speckled trout population makes front page news but you can smoke 6 deer a year???.....its BS. who the fk needs 6 deer per person per year??? My FIL is in a club in Olla where its brown n down.... I refuse to join it because there will NEVER be any quality deer there.

That's probably why I'll never be a deer hunter. I don't see any enjoyment in doing that and it's sad that we have so many shallow minded hunters here who think the opposite.

Weird dead doe in front of buck picture

The 1 buck tag must be for rifle season. I go up there for archery. You get 2 either sex tags. 1 buck before rifle season 1 buck after. And doe tags are 25 dollars a piece. It is a fun place to go. I've never gone during the rut. Usually go late season but not doing that anymore. Hunting with a bow in 0 degree weather isn't the most fun experience haha.

It's getting better...as land/lease/club membership prices continue to go up, the quality of hunter follows.

was -2 degrees this week haha.....
You are allowed 1 buck, 1 doe for bow season with the availability of buy more doe tags
and
the same is for gun season.... its still makes MOST hunters wait for a quality deer before pulling the trigger.
