I have the late 2011 model, 2.4 GHz i5 with 4 Gb of ram and want to upgrade to 8. I went to Apple's site to look for compatible memory but I guess they no longer sell it as it says "no memory currently available for that model".
Can I just go to Best Buy and get a PNY or similar memory kit or would I run into compatibility issues ?

Crucial.com. Run their scanner. It will tell you what you need.
