Immigrants and their U.S.-born children make up more than 40 percent of new Medicaid recipients at a cost of $4.6 billion, according to an analysis of government data.
The Center for Immigration Studies, a low-immigration advocacy group, released a report early Thursday that found both legal and illegal immigrants and their minor children made up 42 percent of Medicaid growth from 2011 to last year.
quote:
“The high rate and significant growth in Medicaid associated with immigrants is mainly the result of a legal immigration system that admits large numbers of immigrants with relatively low-levels of education, many of whom end up poor and uninsured,” the report says. "This fact, coupled with the extensive supports we provide to low-income residents, unavoidably creates very significant costs for taxpayers.”

I'd say "good luck" since a lot of other places are more socialist, but with the caveat that they aren't just inviting everyone, they actually may be an improvement

It's fricking HARD to immigrate LEGALLY to places like NZ, Australia, Canada, many places in Europe.
So sure, those places have massive govt programs for their people, but their people are just as wee bit defensive of those programs as FOR THEM!!!
shite. It's harder to legally immigrate to Mexico than it is to do so here. We're like some sort of retards in this department.

Doesnt matter. As an immigrant you should come here wanting to work hard, live up to the American dream, all that good stuff.
Not start racking up entitlements as soon as you are legal.

Hey OP, in your link, do they break it down any further?
I'm curious about how large the group of immigrants (alone) as a % of new recipients is. Same for their kids.
Only read what you quoted, and some 30-second ad deterred me from waiting to get to the article.

I do agree that legal immigration should be reviewed at the same time that we expand immigration to include people who would otherwise illegally immigrate yet be productive members of society.
I would especially like to review the requirements for work visa's and the like. Too easy to set up a pipeline for immigrants by faking a contracting business.

Immigrant Families Benefit Significantly from Obamacare
quote:
Among the findings:
The number of immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) on Medicaid grew twice as fast as the number of natives and their children on Medicaid from 2011 to 2013 — 11 percent vs. 5 percent.
Immigrants and their children accounted for 42 percent of Medicaid enrollment growth from 2011 to 2013, even though they accounted for only 17 percent of the nation’s total population and 23 percent of overall U.S. population growth over this time period.
About two-thirds of the growth in Medicaid associated with immigrants was among immigrants themselves, rather than the U.S.-born children of immigrants.4
The increase in Medicaid enrollment among immigrants and their children can be roughly estimated as costing $4.6 billion annually.5
By 2013, 25 percent of immigrants and their children were on Medicaid, compared to 16 percent of natives and their children.
Partly because of increased Medicaid enrollment, the share of immigrants and their children without health insurance declined more dramatically than for natives, from 28 percent in 2011 to 23 percent in 2013 — a five percentage-point decline. Among natives and their children, it fell from 13 percent to 11 percent — a two percentage-point decline.
Medicaid accounted for 41 percent of the decline in uninsurance associated with immigrants, while it accounted for only 24 percent of the decline in uninsurance among natives and their children.
Although Medicaid use among immigrants and their children is substantially higher than for natives and their children, it is still the case that 23 percent of immigrants and their children were uninsured in 2013 — twice the rate for natives.
Overall, nearly half (48 percent) of immigrants and their children were uninsured or on Medicaid in 2013, compared to slightly over a quarter of natives (27 percent).

quote:Interesting how the Washington Examiner throws the "illegal" word around as if that is a major factor in the report. Apparently they cannot legally qualify unless they are currently pregnant with a future US citizen.
While some number of illegal immigrants may be enrolled in Medicaid due to fraud or administrative errors, these numbers should be small. A modest number of illegal immigrant women who are pregnant also are enrolled in the program. In addition, a significant share of the U.S.-born children of immigrants have illegal immigrant parents. But overall the growth in Medicaid use associated with immigrants reflects the fact that a large share of immigrants allowed into the country legally are unable to provide health insurance for themselves or their children. As a result, taxpayers step in and provide Medicaid.

Illegals are not eligible for medicaid ya frickn morons. LINK

•Not eligible for Medicare, nonemergency Medicaid, or CHIP.
Note the phrasing "nonemergency". Illegals typically use the emergency room as their primary care physician. Visit any hospital in Southern California and the emergency rooms are overflowing. An elderly man from our church had to wait 8 hours in the emergency room to see a doctor and he was bleeding from the rectum.
We have a problem.

fricking THIS.
I am amazed that I haven't heard this from any politician. We need immigrants coming to this country. Immigration is good for everyone involved. What we don't need is a welfare state that supports both citizens and noncitizens.

This is correct. Emergency Medicaid funds go to reimburse hospitals for care rendered to uninsured individuals, including illegal immigrants.

Canada and the US are the only developed nations with birthright citizenship.
edit: Which I support, but adds argument to the welfare versus immigration policy.
