Very hard not to root for this guy. He also embraces this city and I would think this tragedy would be a big part of that embrace.

hope he stays around for a long long time.

The first thing Ryan saw upon entering Gia’s fourth-floor apartment were her knees. His recollections of what followed are fragmentary. His screaming and running to her. The vacuum-cleaner cord hanging from the second-floor handrail of the spiral staircase, so tight around her neck that at first he couldn’t loosen it. Gia’s dog, Bentley, running to him. A neighbor arriving and dialing 911 as Ryan tried to revive Gia. Seeing the three-word note in her handwriting on the dining room table: Mom gets everything. Paramedics rushing in. Ryan calling Donna. Donna cursing at him, screaming that he knew Gia was sensitive, that he was supposed to protect her. The police pushing through the door. Ryan answering questions, sobbing, blaming himself. Pelicans coach Monty Williams hurrying in with a team security guard and finding Ryan slumped on the carpet, his back to the door, unable to rise. Williams dropping to his knees and hugging his player, the two men rocking back and forth.

Damn

Damn
that's heartbreaking. people read this site so I don't want to be too cold and assholish but let's just say I don't have a high opinion of people like gia that do this. it's selfish and destroys people around them

Read the whole article. The girl had some issues. Let's not focus on that though.

Really incredible piece of work. I read the whole thing. Damn.

Who was Donna? A relative of Gia's?

Eta: that's a really personal story and I'm suprised it got out to the public.

I think it's either Gia's mother or close friend. I think mother.

Wow, what a story. I was fully expecting for Ryan to miss a lot of last season, if not all, and I wouldn't have blamed one at all if he did.

quote:

One fall morning he forced himself to return to the practice center. The first player he saw in the hallway was Al-Farouq Aminu, a lanky forward from Atlanta. Ryan steeled himself for the questions, the sympathetic tone. Aminu just nodded. “What’s up, man?” he said.

I guess if you're returning after a situation like that, Aminu, the most emotionless person on the planet, is the right person to run into.

I make it an effort to be as normal as possible when dealing with people dealing with death or tragedy. When i see my friends for the first time after the death of a loved one ill say something like "hey a-hole" or something that i would say on any other occasion.

If i were going through that i would hate that not only did i lose someone but i lost the ability to be treated the same way.

yeah, when going through something like that having everyone constantly come up to you and remind you of it and using sad tones toward you just makes it worse.

It's hilarious that it was aminu though

Incredible story and Monty sounds like a genuine person, the part where he slept in the living room with Ryan and was there with him talking when he needed to and such spoke volumes to what kind of a person he is.

When I went through it I acted like nothing happened to me. That's probably the wrong way to handle it though. But in this kind of situation, carrying on and staying busy is really the only thing that can keep your mind at ease.

Another thing; I hope more can be done to prevent suicides. It is awful, and many people don't understand just how much it will affect others.

Amazing article. I hope Ryno never leaves this team or this city. Takes some serious strength and faith. Also, I have a new found respect for Monty. He loves his players and obviously will be there for them through thick and thin.

Wow that was an amazing article... I have never had so much respect for an athlete before. I'm glad Ryno is a Pelican, much respect to the man after experiencing such a horrifying event

He was already my favorite player, but damn you have to respect him as a player, human, and philanthropist now. What a great guy. And no matter what kind of coach Monty is perceived as, he's made it clear that he's an awesome man.
