re: Your worst brush with death in a cold weather environment

Fell through an iced over pond riding 4wheeler in northern KY. Water was about 5ft deep and I had waders on. Had to take off waders, left them in the pond and break ice to get to shore (about 100ft) dragging 4wheeler behind me. Mile or so ride home was coldest I have ever been. I think it was around 20 degrees.

Deer hunting with my dad when I was about 7 years old. This was before we had 3-wheelers so we were on horseback, him in the front and me behind him. We pass too close to a tree and a branch gets stuck in the girth and breaks it and we both go crashing through about an inch of ice and into about two feet of water. I also catch the end of a cypress knee right behind my ear during the fall. Our camp was about two miles away so thank God that we had another hunter with us. My dad threw me on the back of his horse we raced back to the camp to start a fire to warm up while my dad had to walk back leading his horse with a broken saddle. Coldest I can ever remember being.

i was probably around 22 or 23. my car was ragged. i got drunk and decided to go to sleep in my car in the parking lot of the bar with my engine running, heater on, and windows rolled up, because it was cold outside. i guessing the only thing that saved me from being poisoned were the large holes in the floorboard of my car and maybe running out of gas fairly quickly.

On a summer trip to Tahoe, we hiked the ski trails behind our hotel. That was some serious hiking at altitude. You really get an appreciation for the grade of those slopes when you are walking them!

Back in 94', I rode with a friend to see an army buddy of his in West Virginia. We were woefully unprepared for the winter storm system we drove into.
On the way back, trying desperately to get out of the storm as safely as possible, we were taking unfamiliar routes to avoid closures and treacherous conditions. Pre internet and GPS, so we were using a trusty road map.
At some point in the early morning hours, we were driving on a winding road through a mountainous area. On a steep curve, the car started hydroplaning and spinning. We spun up on an embankment of plowed/accumulated snow and nearly over the edge to a significant drop.
a few moments after the momentum of the car stopped, it slowly slid back down and settled.
We were shaken, but thankfully didn't get wiped-out by another vehicle while we collected ourselves.
Someone in an SUV stopped and pulled us back on the road and we were back on our way.
While passing through Lexington, Ky., the interstate closed ahead of us, and we went off the road again -- much more gently and less spins. So we ended up having to ditch the car on the road and walked to the airport to fly home.

Went to re brush a duck blind during the splits. Pulled Jon boat into the boat run of the blind, towing a pirogue loaded with brush. We never tied the boat into the boat run, as it barely fit. Me and my friend we sitting in the floor of the blind, untangling decoys, when I noticed that I didnt hear the boat clanging around in the boat run. I jumped up, and the boatload of brush had acted as a sail, and pulled the boat out of the run. Since it was during the split, there wasn't a soul on the lake. Boat is now floating around 30 yard from the blind.
Stripped down to long underwear, slid into the water through the boat run door,
Cold water knocked the breath from me. Kinda dog paddled to boat, tryna keep head dry. Got about 10 yards from boat, got a cramp. Told myself that if I panicked, I was dead. Made it to boat, got in, ran it back to blind.

Went hiking/camping in Vail, CO. It was supposed to get down into the mid 40's, so we thought our 40 degree rated sleeping bags would be fine. It ended up getting down into the 30's

My unit was out on Redstone Arsenal during the winter. We had no fricking tents or anything set up and were sleeping outside in our humvees. We were supposedly pulling all night ops and were sleeping in shifts. Well, it was fricking cold and I had the Humvee on and the heater running which was a no no. Sure enough about 2 am my 1st SGT comes around and immediately starts to reach in and turn it off. I blocked his hand (I was a PFC). He starts to freak and I came up with a glorious lie off the top of my head about the battery having problems and I was told to leave it running. He's like "oh sorry".
You had to know this guy to understand how close I was to death.

Going down a highway in Iowa and hit some black ice. The car slowly turned until we were going down the road sideways at 70 MPH. Just sliding sideways. Zero control. For some reason the car straightened out; if we had reached dry pavement before straightening it would have been damn ugly.

Against my better judgment I decided to drive on the interstate to get across town in a Montana blizzard just to experience it. Ended up having to catch about 45 degrees of drift angle while going 70 mph around a long bend.

Wasn't really deadly, but I was in Chaco Canyon, NM and had a tent and 40 degree sleeping bag. I woke up with numb feet and hands, and tried to get some energy from a leftover McD's cheeseburger. It was crunchy, frozen solid. Overnight low was 13 degrees, with a stiff wind to make it more fun. Coldest night of my life.

Vehicle related. Doing a 360, ending up in a ditch right in front of a State Trooper. I missed his car by inches.
