When I was station in Japan. A bunch of us climbed Mt. Fuji and spent the night. Well, one hell of a cold front came thru and like to kill all of us.

not a brush with death but we got lost riding side by sides on a mountain in Colorado in the snow. luckily we ran across some elk hunters who pointed us in the right direction.

A motorist was killed today in Memphis because of icy conditions. I guess the moisture wasn't really predicted, and no salt or brine was used on the freeways.

quote:

A man has died after he was ejected from his vehicle during a crash on the ice-covered roadway at Bill Morris Parkway and Hacks Cross Thursday morning, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

quote:

Shortly before 6 a.m., Memphis police and emergency crews shut down northbound Interstate 240 at Lamar Avenue after an accident that police said involved at least 10 cars. This stretch of roadway has reopened.
Another accident was on Interstate 55 at Elvis Presley. In that crash, a pickup flipped over.

Around 6:40, a school bus accident was reported at Raleigh-Millington and Fite Road. About 20 children were on the bus, but no injuries were reported.

Another bus crash occurred at Brunswick Road and Jack Bond Road. The bus was headed to Barrett’s Chapel School. No children were injured in the crash.

Officers reported Bill Morris Parkway was a sheet of ice and cautioned motorists.

I honestly didn't have trouble with my commute. The cops had 385 shut down by the time I got to it. I saw a bunch of accidents being cleaned up though.

It's a little early for ice like that. I suspect that this will be a particuarly cold winter.

I've had brain freeze before. How I survived my brain being frozen is beyond me.

I've camped in single digit weather but my sleeping bag is an old WWII Navy bag with three layers of goose feathers so I was ok. The wife woke me up wanting to get in my sleeping bag though. The closest I've been to a brush with death was getting lost on a snowed in trail in Yosemite as the sun was getting low. Panicked, then calmed myself down and remembered if I just went downslope I would eventually hit the road.

Driving home from Breckenridge over Hoosier Pass in whiteout conditions. There were times when I couldn't see anything for 2-3 seconds, which doesn't sound like much but when there's a 2000 ft. drop in one direction and a rock wall in the other, it's a frickin eternity.

Driving I-70 between the tunnel and Dillon in complete whiteout. It was snowing so hard you couldn't tell if you were moving or stopped. About 1/2 way the windshield wipers froze up and broke.

frick that drive... Hate it.

Filled a nalgene with boiling water and placed it between my thighs to warm the femoral artery while I slept when hiking the Appalachian Trail. Thought I would die.

When I was 15 I was Duck Hunting by myself.I was walking along the bank and stepped on some wet looking mud and sunk to my waist til I hit hard bottom.

It took me an hour to get out.If it had been over my head I'd probably still be there.

It was cold too.

I got on 385 at Forest Hill around 7:40, the eastbound lanes were closed, but westbound was not. Before I got to Hacks Cross, I was the only car on the road. I felt like Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky when he is the only person in Times Square. I saw a car do a 360 behind me near the Winchester exit and several other wrecks that had already happened. Any idea what happened downtown on Riverside? My wife was stuck by Presidents Island starting at 8:30 and last I texted her she was still stuck at 10:15.

I apologize for hijacking the thread. I don't think I've ever had a brush with death because of cold weather

Almost got shanked walking from our parking spot to Bama's stadium at the 2010 Iron Bowl, they really should move their stadium out of the hood. It was right around freezing, does this count?

Duck hunting on lake ponchatrain. Boat took on water and flipped over. Set on the bottom for 3 hrs until someone came out to save us.

Another time camping in Arkansas. Canoeing down the river and it flipped over. Everything was soaked. FreeZing.

Was fishing in a 12 ft flat boat on Lake Rosemound. It was about 20 outside. As I got about 100 yards from the bank, a black lab from our camp started swimming out to me. as the dog got to the boat, he tried to get in and flipped it. I swam back to the shore with the dog licking me the whole way as I swam. Granted it was his fault I was in the water, but I was glad he was there to keep me going. Had to get in a hot shower the camp to get feeling back in my body. It was nothing nice.

Here's an awesome article on what it's like to freeze to death.

quote:

Digital readings flash: 24 beats per minute and a core temperature of 79.2 degrees.

The doctor shakes his head. He can't remember seeing numbers so low. He's not quite sure how to revive this man without killing him.

In fact, many hypothermia victims die each year in the process of being rescued. In "rewarming shock," the constricted capillaries reopen almost all at once, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. The slightest movement can send a victim's heart muscle into wild spasms of ventricular fibrillation. In 1980, 16 shipwrecked Danish fishermen were hauled to safety after an hour and a half in the frigid North Sea. They then walked across the deck of the rescue ship, stepped below for a hot drink, and dropped dead, all 16 of them.

went to gatlinburg in december... the place we rented had a really steep, curved driveway with about a 30ft drop off on the right side. tried to climb the driveway, got about 3/4 of the way and started sliding backwards and came within a few feet of going over the edge before the left from tire got caught in a rut.

not sure if i would have died but, it would not have been fun.
