My favorite tent site at FP is the one on an island that you have to canoe to. I haven't made it out to Palmetto yet. Do they have a decent trail system there?

If you want trails - Chicot or Clear Springs Rec Area in Mississippi

Palmetto looked to have tons more tent sites than FP. I went a couple weeks ago and most were empty.

I've done Chicot plenty and was looking for a quick day hike.

Palmetto would be an easy half day hike. We are doing a Ranger led hike Saturday at 11am. I will report back.

Have a good time man! Nothing better than getting into the woods for a few nights. Even if it is car camping. Have you thought about what you're going to use as insulation between your bags and blankets and the ground? The ground without insulation of some kind will suck the warmth away and make things real cold.

Can you get one of those propane heaters that hooks to the top of the propane tank?

Not for use inside the tent.

If electricity is available, a good electric heater in the tent is great. I always put mine on an insulated surface (plywood etc..) or something. Really heats up tent well and easy to control temp.

I put tarps on the ground under tent. Inside tent I put a couple large thick homemade quilts down then sleeping bags on top. The site has full hookup so I run a small electric heater right when we get in the tent and early in the am.

That is the plan. The site has electricity and water. I usually just kick the heat on for a few minutes when we first get in the tent and then early in the am.
