Headed to Palmetto State park to go tent camping this weekend. First trip with my youngest daughter, she is so excited. But damn some screwy weather. Mid 30s friday night, then saturday high of 65 low of 55. Can't cancel because she would be too dissappointed. Going to make sure we have tons of blankets and firewood and also have a small heater for the tent just to warm it up once we go to sleep and in the am. Will not run it all night. Bringing our bikes and just want a good outdoor trip. WOuld be my luck the only weekend I had available the weather is freaking cold. But we will make the best of it and have a kick arse fire.

Friday night will be perfect for sleeping in a tent. Bring a spotlight and look for hogs, they are everywhere at Palmetto.

Have fun.

That is going to be terrible with a young kid. Good luck.

Would personally love to go camping with the cold weather. But I don't have kids.

Hope y'all have mummy sleeping bags. Tell her to put on extra socks at night. Extra pants/PJs if possible.

With enough extra clothing, some of the best sleep I've gotten is in a tent in below-freezing weather. Much better than trying to camp in 80+ degrees and mugginess during the summer

Definitly bringing the Qbeam. She cant wait to look for animals. I agree Friday night will be perfect weather just worried for a 4yr old's first trip she might not like the cold. They have some game cameras deep in the park where they have had a few black bears on camera. Would love to spot one.

How will this be terrible. We will have a kick arse fire friday night and then the weather Saturday is high 65 low 55. Thats perfect for beating around in the bush with a kid. My daughter is so fired up about it. Yes it will be cold Friday night but she wont even notice with the fire and roasting marshmellows and spotlighting for animals.

I much prefer camping in the cold weather also. I love having the tent open to the stars and the breeze blowing thru. I am not a fan of camping in a tent that feels like a sauna. My daughter is a human furnace. I am pretty sure with our sleeping bags and extra quilts we will be plenty warm. I am just as excited as she is.

My bad. It is going to be in the 30s where I live. I forget most of you live near the coast.

Yes it is. We have gone a few times for day trips to play in the splash pad and canoe. This will be our first over night trip. My daughter has been talking about it all week. Makes me feel like a kid again going camping with my dad. We live about 30 mins from Palmetto so I plan on making many more trips there in the future. Chicot State Park is another one of my favorites for tent camping.

Do ya'll tent camp, camper, or cabins? I love tenting in Chicot because the tent sites are nestled away in the woods. Palmetto not so much.

I went recently, and want to go back and camp. My question is When I arrive, does the park determine which site we us? Or can I pick a site so as to be away from the bulk of the campers/RV's? I know they have a primitive site by the lake, but would rather not haul all the stuff that far as I have young kids with no patience.

Check out Reserve America website. You can book online and see a picture of each site. We booked site 88 to be close to comfort station for wife and daughter. If nothing else you can call and book. I never receommend just showing up because during busy weekends they may have no spots available. the website I mentioned lets you sort by tent site etc.

Palmetto SP and Fausse Point book up months in advance. I doubt they'd have an available spot when you get there.

Chicot SP is much larger. We have never had a problem just driving up and finding a spot.

I wasn't referring to the hike-in backpacking sites or canoe sites. The RV sites in the campground are always booked. We always try to get one of the premium sites with a dock on the canal.
