The Baton Rouge-based Mexican chain Izzo's Illegal Burrito will open in the former Popeyes location at 4041 Magazine St.

Construction began Thursday (Nov. 7). The restaurant should be open before Mardi Gras.

"Magazine has been on our radar ever since we opened our first store in 2001 by LSU," emailed co-founder Ozzie Fernandez. "We are very excited about the Magazine location and becoming neighbors and friends with the local community."

The Popeyes closed last March.

Izzo's offers made-to-order burritos, tacos, nachos and salads.

"This store will feature a nice covered patio," Fernandez said, "and we plan to roll out a Mexican breakfast featuring some of my family’s favorites -- like housemade chorizo and egg tacos and slow-roasted barbacoa."

Well maybe it won't be a complete waste. Hope they open before 8 am.

Wish Popeye's would take over Danny's location.

I have an event tonight at NOLA brewery. I hope it's good. Tomorrow will be day drinking in the FQ. I have a few ideas for lunch.

I have a turnout for the Knights of Peter Claver on Sunday at mass. I hope y'all enjoy the outfit.

This is awesome!!! Was mad when I move from God's country and missed the opening of the Izzo's (grand opening today).

I knew the New Orleans people were full of shite when it came to chains, they eat the stuff up. Soon Magazine will look like Siegen

I hear the building has a rich history as well, might even be haunted.

I took this picture yesterday. If you look closely you can see what appears to be a ghost dog standing inside the store.
