My current 401k allocates all of my assets to RALSX, but I've been reading that VTSMX is a much better option. Should I switch to VTSMX or stay where I am? Very inexperienced in investing, so any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas.

GREAT choice, move immediately.

vtsmx good

ralsx bad

frankly, RASLX is a terrible fund...for many reasons.

this being said, if the market crashes, VTSMX could fall more than RASLX. This doesn't mean RASLX is better in any way, it means that if you have a short term investment horizon, VTSMX may not be best for you, but in ANY case RASLX is terrible.

good luck

ETA: fixed RALSX link

Wow thanks for the graph man. I'm 25, so it's definitely a long term investment. I thought we pay fees for a 401k because our money is managed for us. Why isn't it placed in the best fund? Unbelievable.

nah man that's how ignorant I am on the subject. Switched over to VTSMX. Seems like a no brainer. Thanks again for your input

If I'm not being trolled and you're serious, PLEASE don't make the move based on some wacko on an LSU message board. Read up on the fund, understand the risks, and make the decision. You could very easily lose 50% of a broad market fund just like people did in 08-09. It's always come back, but that doesn't mean it will next time.

good luck or good trolling, whichever applies

I hear you. Just trying to make the best decision to grow my money man. Guess I should read up a bit more and maybe consult with an advisor before making a move. RALSX returns are just so pitiful. I feel like my 401k is a glorified savings account with an employer match. Any suggestions on something a little safer that VTSMX but with better returns than RALSX?

You should take our advice with a grain since it's an internet message board. That being said, you're 25. You have plenty of time to recover if another 08-09 year occurs. It's shot up 9.2% over the last 3 weeks after the big dip we had a month ago. It will go up and down. If the total stock market doesn't recover from an occurrence like that, what can do? No one knows the future. I just converted my VTSMX into admiral shares (VTSAX). My plan is to branch out to bonds and other stuff after I build up a good chunk of VTSAX first.
