Mass migration leading up to opener

Forecasts are predicting 5 days below freezing for northern states starting Sunday. Dakota potholes will be frozen over and should start a huge migration just in time for the LA opener. Can't wait til the 15th.

Too bad the weather isn't the sole determining factor. Remember how cold it was last year and there still were no birds...
This article proves we are basically clueless on the migration and why and when they decide to migrate.
Dr. Rohwer has been studying ducks and the migration his entire adult life.

first paragraph in that article:
A 5 day hard freeze up north should do the trick.

It’s almost entirely weather-driven. Two things move ducks: snow and ice. They need food and open water and they’ll move when they can’t get either one,” he says

You need snow and lots of it IMHO. They will keep water open, but I believe the food has to be completely covered before they leave.

Those temps will hardly trigger a mass migration. May get the bw and pins down along w'the spoonies.

I know it seems like I'm being Debbie Downer but, I am going off of past experiences.
I sure hope it pushes a pile of birds down.
Did you read the entire article? The article is one huge contradiction.

admittedly no, I read the first half. I'm sure i'm being overly optimistic, just starting to get excited for the LA opener. I've been hunting in NE TX, but the birds aren't down yet.

Mass migration may be a bit of an overstatement but the front should push a good amount of birds down.

Yep. Large amounts of snow are needed to cover up the dry fields of barley, corn, and soybeans the ducks feed on in the Northern plains. I guess if the harvest isn't far enough along some could keep moving south looking for easier food options.

there are lots of variables that have to do with duck migration. And being a former student of Frank Rhower, I can tell you one thing for certain. I am going to drink a lot of beer at my duck camp.

Who doesn't drink a lot of beer at the duck camp?

We shoot mostly calendar birds. Weather seems to play a small factor each year.

Before no till farming that would have triggered it
Combining that weather with this moon phase is win win

No till farming is the biggest factor in my humble opinion. Hunting a few times in Kansas in mid January and it's still a buffet with waste grain in the fields. It doesn't rot with the weather there or sprout like it does in la after the harvest and a rain. Looks like fresh seed out of the bag. 95% of that would be covered by tilling and the birds would eat it out over time and be forced to move south. Now there is more food than they can eat takes snow cover to move them

Good layer of snow over most of the Dakotas and freezing temps will prevent it from melting for the foreseeable forecast. Plus, most of the water is already frozen. Migration reports from ducks unlimited are saying the migration is in full swing. I usually don't hold too much stock in individual reports but nearly all of them are reporting migrating birds coming down with this front.

Larry Reynolds is going survey this week and the "official" report should be out soon.

Weather-permitting, Reynolds will fly the coastal survey today through Wednesday, and then fly Catahoula Lake on Thursday. Unless he encounters weather issues, he said he expects to have the complete report finalized on Friday afternoon, and it will be availalbe shortly thereafter on LouisianaSportsman.com.

Sitting in deer stand in NE KS. I can confirm the migration is on. Ducks and geese headed south in huge and constant flocks

That's what I like to hear. I'll be in KS in 12 days
