Cerakote Thread

Since people seem sometimes interested in cerakote, i figured i'd start a thread for discussion and questions, as well as completed projects of course.
**I am not a professional nor do i ever intend to be. I do it for fun and am not certified so my results may be (see: expected to be) less than professional grade.
I will kick it off with a project i did for Bapple. he wanted his slide done in Patriot Brown
Ruger SR45
stripped slide. notice the rust on the sight dovetail from a sub par factory coating
into the blast cabinet it goes
safety first. aluminum oxide is no fun to inhale
mid-blast. i'm using 120 grit AL Oxide @ 80PSI
bare slide, almost ready for paint
at this point it takes an acetone bath for for 15 minutes to degrease, then must be pre baked (called the gas-out phase) in order to release any oils that may be within the metal's surface. if this phase does bring any oils to the surface, it must go back to the acetone bath and gassed out again to ensure there are no unwanted oils in the metal. i didn't take pictures of this step, use your imagination, hint: it looks like a gun slide in a ziploc bag full of acetone.
then i hang it up in my fancy spray booth.
after spraying all desired surfaces, carefully get it into the Hamilton Beach Cerakote 2000 Toaster Oven.
then it is baked for 45min @ 300* (quick cure) or 2 Hours @ 250*
resist the urge to touch this hot piece of gorgeous metal.
once it cools, it can be handled, dropped, shot or whatever, as the curing process is complete.
a couple of thoughts:
As this is only the 3rd or 4th time i have cerakoted various items, it is still not a perfect finish. I am using an airbrush which makes it quite difficult to lay on a "wet" coat. the air brush causes a "dry spray" which produces a smooth, but "grippy" texture compared to a "glossy feel" that is desired. dry spray occurs when the paint actually dries mid air before it contacts the surface of the metal and I'm afraid will compromise the durability of the coating.

How much you charge? Upper and lower receiver of AR in FDE. I am definitely not comfortable doing this. I am very impatient when doing anything with paint.

Looks awesome
Throw a brother a price on a Beretta AL390 barrel/receiver.
Burnt Bronze of course....

Can you get closer with the spray gun? Maybe turn down the throughput and decrease the distance.

Don't take this the wrong way guys, but this is not a service I plan to offer to the public. I am no where near good enough to confidently accept money to cerakote other peoples firearms. Maybe one day I will be but unfortunately my day job pays way better. I barely had enough time to get Bapple's slide done in 3 weeks. Only reason I did it for him is because he and I are close friends (don't think any less of me )

I'm taking it the wrong way. Grrr.

You are exactly correct. That's why it is difficult to achieve a wet coat with an airbrush because you have to keep literally about 1/4" away from the slide to keep it from dry spraying. To do an entire slide this way would be very tedious and still would most likely yield inconsistent results because of how many brush strokes you would have to make. I have a mini spray gun that I will be setting up and hopefully it will yield the desired results

Did you blast off the SR45 engraving on the slide?

No, its just the crappy iPotato camera

I've got a few "projects" I'd like to banter about with you.
What number am I in all of this now. :bang head:
ETA- Good work, if you ever want a couple of easier one let me know.

Once I finish my shop I plan on doing this to a few guns and maybe a few project to sell.

You need an HVLP gun (high volume/low pressure) to prevent the flashing that's occuring. I have a few spray guns that might just be laying around if you'd be willing to trade out (might even throw in a regulator). I'd like my AR done. What size compressor you got? Let me know llcrc.llc@gmail.com

Yep, I've got one that came with my cerakote. I'll be working with that one from here out most likely
I use 2 different compressors. A large one for the blast cabinet and a tiny one for the paint gun. Cerakote is sprayed at only 15-17psi so the smallest compressors suffice plenty

I have to say dude, those closeups look amazing. That color is sharp! Can't wait to get my black extractor and black sights on there. The two tone will look so good.
You're welcome to keep my gun as a guinea pig and try the wet spray. As you know, I will be out for a week or two following next Monday.

Haven't posted in a while, figured I would get in on this one on my way to the stand this morning.
My PSA AR in burnt bronze accented with od green
My 24 year old 870 express burnt bronze accented with titanium
Really happy with how my guns turned out. I love that burnt bronze.

Those look awesome. Did you do them yourself?
Posted on 11/4/14 at 6:33 am to tiddlesmcdiddles
No, a good friends dad started gun smithing several years back and we got him interested in cerakote. I gave him my AR and a buddy gave him another 870 to do as his first customer projects after he learned on several of his own guns.
In a years time he went from just doing our guns to now he has constant business.
He's cerakoting, hydro dipping, and re blueing now and is always busy.
I brought him a set of synthetic stocks for my 870 to dip that I'm gonna put on for hunting season. I'll post pics if I end up getting them back today.
