I understand it is not a color that they breed for since it against everyrhing the name stands for but I am looking for a breeder that I can get a Golden retriever fron with a black coat. Mainly because I like the darker coat and the temperment of Retrievers around kids. I do not plan to breed the dog. Just want a family pet with a good disposition that is good with kids.

I had a golden retriever that got knocked up by a chocolate lab and all of the pups were black, with 3 of them having the long coat of the retriever. They were all taken by friends and family and grew up to beautiful dogs: one pet, one great duck dog, and one police narcotics dog.

My wife is against getting a Labrador. And I like the golden coat in black. All Goldens that I have been around are mellow. I am also considering Dobermans, GSP and Belgian Malinois. The only one I have no experience around are GSP.

If you want a mellow dog, do not get a german shorthair pointer.

A GSP is the absolute opposite if mellow. Mine is great around kids, very intelligent.... But mellow isn't one of his attributes and take this into account as well. The vet cares for several of them and his son hunts them and he says mine is the most calm he has ever seen. They like to work and play constantly. Great temperament, but this isn't what you are looking for.
Not all goldens are calm either. Great dispositions, but again you are looking for a mellow dog and have bird dogs at the top of your list. I'd say this as well, when you start looking for dogs with recessive genes you can get other recessive genes with them which could be a bad thing.

My sister has a 2yo GR. There's nothing mellow about her's. That dog goes ninety to nothing all day long.

I understand they are not all mellow. The majority of GR that I have been around have been. I have personally owned labradors but they were high strung. I may go with a dobie.

Have you thought about a black British lab? A little longer hair and more mellow.

You better have a yard or property where a GSP can run. They will go insane and tear shite up if you keep it in a small yard

My yard isn't huge.... But, I run mine and constantly throw toys. I wouldn't say you have to have a big yard for a GSP, although it would be nice. You just have to be active.
Again... Stay away from bird dogs if you want mellow. I'd say you were around outliers as far as goldens. They are generally great family dogs... shite most bird dogs are, just need to be active.

Belgian Malinois

These dogs are incredibly high strung, moreso than GSPs. I'd honestly recommend a black GSD over a Mal. Not the show dog type that are bred for looks (i.e. slanted back), go for the kind bred for law enforcement with a flat back.

I have one laying beside me right now. He's 3.5 and a duck hunting machine. Was easily trained by me (no prior experience training a duck dog).

I started doing more research. Looks like Zacattack new the actual dog I was looking for. A flat coated retriever. Anyone have experience? Same as a GR or more towards a lab. I understand they are all going to be similar since they are retrievers by nature. Who knows, I may train it to be a blood dog for deer tracking. But the number one priority is a family pet. So field trial results and champion bloodlines are not important
