The original Texas Chainsaw is a masterpiece and blows Halloween outta the water.

Halloween manufactured suspense about as good as any film before or sense. It's influence is still felt throughout the entire horror genre.

What is so creepy and unsettling about it is how slow and drawn out it is at times. The cinematography and editing are simplistic, yet effective, and the realistic element of the plot (sans the conclusion) makes it all the more frightening.

There are few cheap scares (e.g. jump scares with loud noises or sudden movements) and it has one of the most classic musical scores of the entire genre.

I love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre as well, but it felt too frantic at times with the poor editing and frantic pacing.

It deviates drastically from the source material at times, but boy is it effective at what it changes or alters.

The combination of Kubrick's superior cinematography and Nicholson's intense portrayal yields one of the most well-crafted, not just terrifying, horror films ever made.

I tried so desperately to like that movie, both the original and the prequel, but man was it a disappointment.

It seems outright goofy at times and I was never truly scared at any point in either film. Then again, aliens have never done it for me.

The premise is pretty fantastic but there are just too many superior films out there.

Ridley Scott's Alien.

I suppose it's not pure horror but I love sci-fi.

I agree with all of this. I watched it for the first time a few years ago. I can appreciate the movie though.
