So the family purchased a 2015 Yukon with entertainment system. I did not have the dealership install Wifi becouse the open market typically has more options.

Are there any top shelf units on the market that would stream to a blueray TV and multiple devices?

Bluray TV? Is that a TV built into a bluray disc? What are you trying to stream? You realize that your phone most likely can serve as a wifi hotspot?

WTF are you even saying?? You went out and spent that much cheddar on a new ride and didn't opt for the wifi service?? If i'm not mistaken it's a one time fee correct?

I'd imagine it's subscription based with a cell provider and would require a data plan

That's simply speculation

If it's truly the case, just get a wifi hotspot from Verizon or att

this is what we need...wifi in cars. people need that facebook and twitter at all times

so instead of trying to do anything to restrict smart phone usage in vehicles they do more to encourage it...awesome

That's how it works in my Audi. Unlimited data for $30 a month.

Its not, but they're counting on the sheep to flock, because it's perceived as cool.

You are looking at this all wrong. The more stuff we do that we "shouldn't" while driving the sooner we'll make cars that do the driving for us.

Chevy probably gets a cut of your monthly cell phone plan for your car.

We have a blue ray player in the dash with a flip down TV for the rear passangers.

I am trying to avoid the need for disks. I can load the movies onto a SD card as the vehicle has a reader for that.

I was looking to find a way to stream netflix. apple TV seems to be the best bet but it still needs a signal.

This is what I don't get either. The only benefit I would see is if you had some wifi connection only devices.

All modern smartphones allow you to use their LTE signal as a wifi hotspot. The only way I could see the in car wifi as being beneficial is if you get truly unlimited data. (Edit: Chevy claims to have a more powerful antenna than in smartphones so the signal is better. I don't think this matters that much as I have been able to get 50 Mbps down while on the road with my iPhone) OP is wanting to stream Netflix in the car. That's going to be pretty expensive data plan and the quality may not be that great most of the time. Let's say they watch 10 hours of netflix a month (20 minutes a day). that's what, like 15-20 GB? I think AT&T's 15 GB shared data plan starts at $160 a month.

Here are pricing options:

quote:

Pricing depends on whether you subscribe to OnStar’s advisor-based service for the first 3GB of data. After that, pricing is the same for subscribers and nonsubscribers alike.

200 MB: $5 per month (OnStar subscribers); $10 per month (non-subscribers)
1GB: $15 per month (OnStar subscribers); $20 per month (nonsubscribers)
3GB: $30 per month
5GB: $50 per month

One-day use by anyone (OnStar subscriber or not) costs $5 a day for 250MB. A 12 month, 10GB “bucket” of 4G LTE service will cost $150 for OnStar subscribers or $200 for nonsubscribers. Existing AT&T customers can add GM vehicles to their Mobile Share plan for $10 a month.

So you'll be able to pay $50/month for the privilege of streaming 2.5 hours worth of netflix, assuming that 1hr = 2 GB

and here is how much data netflix uses:

quote:

Watching Netflix uses about 1 GB of data per hour for each stream of standard definition video, and up to 3 GB per hour for each stream of HD video. This can create headaches for Netflix members that have a monthly bandwidth or data cap on their Internet service. Below, you'll find a couple of ways to reduce the amount of data Netflix uses, without having to resort to drastic measures (like actually watching less Netflix).

Adjust your data usage settings

Adjusting the data usage settings for your account is the easiest way to reduce the amount of bandwidth used while watching Netflix. There are 4 data usage settings to choose from, each estimate below is per stream:

Low (0.3 GB per hour)
Medium (SD: 0.7 GB per hour)
High (best video quality, up to 3 GB per hour for HD, 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD)
Auto (adjusts automatically to deliver the highest possible quality, based on your current internet connection speed)

So, in short, good luck streaming netflix to your vehicle.

If I recall correctly, with iOS 8, you can now stream media on an iOS device to a (3rd generation only) Apple TV via bluetooth instead of only via wifi. If you have movies stored in an iPad, iPod, or iPhone, then use those devices to shoot your movies to the Apple TV. No more need for a data signal.

It still uses wifi, but you don't need to connect to a router.

Damn that's not bad at all.

But the problem I see with that is, it's really only good for road trips when you're in the car. Unless you're camping or something...but then again, you'd have to have your car on for as long as you wanted to use it?
