So here's the deal. I just moved to Baton Rouge from Alabama (don't crucify me, not a Bama fan) and here in LA they require emissions inspections unlike my home state. My truck is about 10 years old, runs great, and has no serious exhaust problems. The truck failed inspection and I was quoted about $4000 for repairs of sensors and other issues. What I need to know is:

1) Is there a shady shop in town to take my truck to and get it passed? I am willing to spend a little money.
2) Is there a decent mechanic around I can trust who will repair this truck for a decent price?

Did I miss anything..?

I have never had my exhaust checked in Louisiana. I always got brake tags in Nola.

this makes no sense

why not go ahead get it fixed and then go for inspection?

You could probably do that all at the same place in some cases

Vehicle inspections are more strict in EBR and surrounding parishes. They are also 2x as expensive and last for 1 year instead of 2 (so 4x more expensive)...

Go somewhere other than Baton Rouge to have your truck inspected.

Aren't the emission test only in like 3 parishes? Couldn't you just drive to the next parish and avoid this?

This, the people making $10/hour at a gas station will pass anyone for Mr. Grant and Mr. Franklin gets even the stodgiest employee ready to pass anyone.

Not if your registration says you live in the areas that require the emissions check.

Is your check engine light on? What kind of truck?

The catalytic converters failed on my old car and the repair cost basically totaled it. The car ran fine and I wasn't ready for a new car note. I bought a code reader on Amazon for $30 and cleared the check engine light. After I did this, a "pending" code would still show up if I plugged in a code reader and scanned it, which may get caught at an inspection shop. Your car has to run a series of tests before it can determine if your emissions are good and things are working properly. This test involves driving at certain speeds for specific amounts of time, making turns, etc. I figured out that there was a small window of time between when the test finished (pending code is cleared) and when the check engine light would come on. I would take it in to get inspected during that window and it always passes.

Hope this helps.
