Our family got a bill from Womans Hospital for a procedure my wife had done. She got caught in bewtween deductibles on her insurance plan and is being required to pay most of the cost of the procedure. Has anyone had success with negotiating a medical bill with them? Just wondering before I shell out the cash for this.

Fresh out of school (uninsured) I got an $11,000 bill from Tulane for kidney stone "treatment" that included 6 hours in the ER, two saline bags, an x-ray, a CT scan and a demerol. I didn't "have" $11,000 so I waited for a few bills to pile up before calling Tulane. I flat out said there was no way I could pay it and they said "could you pay $3,400?". So they knocked it down 75% pretty damn easily. I sent them a check.

You can get at least 20% off if you just say the words "Can I have a discount?" Way more if you put more effort into it.

I've been told that as long as they 20% they are usually ok to leave you alone after that.

Your bill is already discounted to your insurances fee schedule. You're not being charged a self pay/cash price, so it's unlikely they will discount it. Payment plan...yes. Discount...probably not.

If she wasn't "in between dedcutibles", they would definitly be getting 100% of your allowable, so I can't see them budging. At least your deductible is paid early on this year. Any elective procedures you need?

ETA: You could claim financial hardship and MAYBE get the 20% other people are mentioning. But I rarely consider discounts until the account is in a collections status. For that first 6 months, I'm trying to collect 100%.

What does this mean? Are you saying she has a large deductible and is having to pay for it? As poster above me states, if it is a deductible you are talking about then it has already been discounted to contract rate ....ask for a payment plan

After doing more research, I decided to just pay the full bill. Any amount off wouldn't have been worth my time arguing about it. Thanks for the recs though.
