Grow some hops, they'll cover that thing before too long.

Solid panels will suck because they will reflect the rising heat. Will need fans.

Or get vines growing.

I like the canvas idea, but needs to be treated for Louisiana weather conditions.

Forgot to draw your chalk line? That second posy on the backside is struggling.

I would advise you to put a small column below your 6x6, you are placing a lot of dead load shear on the 2x's.

I had one of these when I lived in Dallas. You skinny slats seem to have too much space in between them. How wide are those slats and how wide are the gaps?

Also, what is direction of the sun in relation to the direction of the skinny slats?

No, there is a sprinkler line running there. Had to offset it so it wouldn't hit. It does the job, and i will have azalea's or camelias covering that up.

Those pricks at the HOA let you build that?

That's what the extra 4x4's are for. We built the thing and noticed that issue. SO we went back and dug more holes and placed more posts. There are 27 posts supporting the deck. All dug by a post hole digger, 2'6" in the ground with hand mixed concrete. That was a huge pain in the arse.

Gotcha. But i would put another 4X to the left and/or right of that one bc I'm anal like that. Vines wouldn't speed up the deterioration process? Looks cool, but how do you prevent it from destroying the wood?

Impressive, but BR has no shortage of Mexicans that could have done it for you.

Slats are 1x4's, with a 6 or 8 inch gap.

Well, it depends on the time of day. Noon, it's right over head. Morning, the sun comes up at the front of the house, so no issue.
Later in the day (afternoon) the sun travels to the back of the house. Sun light runs parallel at times.

It is probably fine, but yea, it is bothering me too. I'd want those columns extending down into the ground.

She didn't want that smell on the deck. Didn't make sense to me.

Me and my brother were the mexicans for that day. And my brother in law.

The final option is just getting some sort of climbing vine like wisteria and plant next to the pergola. I like the look, but the maintenance seems like it would be a little too much to overtake.

I've looked at getting Wisteria.

Then I read this:

However, note that it can take a good six years for a newly established wisteria to start flowering—sometimes longer!

Bug AC...no opinion on the covering but the "wait a year until staining" is out of date, at least here in NC. Something removable would be nice and in the case of the corrugated, would only take a few minutes if held in place minimally.

I'll be honest, I love the smell of hops, but some don't. The vine definitely puts off an aroma.

I can't wait to re-try to get grow some hops (dog got into my first attempt).

When it comes to projects around the home, women have no idea what they want. It's you job to tell them. Even when they appear to know what they want, they actually do not.
