I tried watching Fallon a few nights ago and it is cringe worthy watching him interview. Craig Ferguson is the best in the business.

I <3 Jimmy. He puts off the vibe that he's just like one of us. I love it.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I'd like to see him conduct a decent interview with a guest sometimes. You know, like maybe people really want to hear about what the guest has to say, etc.

That is a ridiculous take. There has never been a late night host who has ever done anything more than canned pre-rehearsed softball interview in the entire history of late night television. If you want to hear real interviews listen to stern interview these celebrities for an hour on his radio show.

Nobody's asking for him to be Mike Wallace but it's not a lot to want him to not sound like a 10 year old girl meeting Justin Beiber.

I get the criticism, but I like Fallon a lot. I always have back to his SNL days. He seems like a likable guy and he seems like a happy, decent person. Plus, he is funny and really talented. I like the way he incorporates his musical talent into the show. It would have been a mistake for The Tonight Show to have tried to fit him into Leno or Carson's mold. Instead, they are letting him be himself and transform the show.

Do we really need more interviews with celebrities about that time they did that thing? I mean, who cares? But, I love watching Emma Stone dominate a lip sync battle. I learn way more about her in that piece than I do hearing her tell some story I could care less about.

It is a more experiential show, which is good and fits our culture. If you want serious interviews, go to one of news channels. It is late night comedy and Fallon is excelling at it. Why should it be anything more than that?

I'm pretty bummed Craig Ferguson is about to hang it up. His show is a riot. I've been a pretty regular viewer since 2006. His show's gone through quite a transformation over the years.

Ok... What's your opinion on all the constant fake laughing he does in interviews?

I get that and I don't really disagree with that, but OP was saying he was "old fashioned" like Leno or Letterman or even Carson were able to garner anything of substance in those canned interviews. Carson was funny for the sit downs because of his quick wit, like Fallon is putting the celebrities in games, contests and skits.

yes, but Ferguson's ratings are sadly terrible

RE: the comment of "who watches late night shows for interviews?" I would beg to differ. A heavily formulated product like the Leno or Letterman interviews can be really less than useful or entertaining but a more spontaneous and authentically unexpected thing like watching Ferguson interview a befuddled Morgan Freeman is television gold.

"who watches late night shows for comedy?" is at least as relevant of a question. The jokes in a typical monologue are pretty far removed from creative or cutting edge humor IMO

Yeah I was wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that he's terrible. There's no depth to anything he does, and it's rarely funny.

You want Leno back? Doesn't Charlie Rose still interview people at that round table? Watch that.

Maybe he will get better at interviews. Conan O'Brian epitomizes not allowing guests to speak. These interviews have never been unscripted and spontaneous.

Honestly, I don't care about the fake laughing. I am least interested in the interviews anyway. I rarely care what a Hollywood star has to say about anything, but I enjoy the entertainment aspect of his show. So, he can laugh all he wants. He seems to be genuinely happy as a human being, unlike Letterman. At 10:30 at night if I turn him on, I am pretty much done with deep thinking.

What made Carson different than this era of hosts is stars came on just to come on the Carson show. Not because they had a movie coming out this next Friday. John Wayne, Don Rickles, Burt Reynolds, etc appeared just for the sake of being on with Johnny. (Not saying there weren't blatant plug interviews) but, that allowed Johnny to talk to them in a less formulaic way a lot of times.

Doubtful. If he's successful now why change what brings the audience?

See, I think Conan's interviews are about as genuine as Ferguson's most of the time.

And I think both get some moments of

unscripted and spontaneous.

Has Jimmy Fallon ever told a joke or done a comedy skit without busting out laughing? Or is that his schtick?

Yeah, and I can see Fallon becoming that with stars coming on just to be in his games and skits and musical numbers. That is when these shows are at their best, in my opinion. When the publicist sets them up because of a movie and then the host asks about their dog and they tell a 5 minute story about how the dog pooped on the neighbor's lawn while they were doing yoga or something like that - I could not care less. That is what these shows have become. Fallon is at least changing the format to something somewhat interesting.
