Let's assume that I don't care that the google App Store is unavailable, I'm willing to try a new operating system, and I don't want to drop $200 on an upgrade.

Is this phone a terrible get? If so, what should I pick instead?

aside from actual phone functions since I have not used one...if its anything like the fire tablets I don't see it being a problem if you are not invested in android or iphone platforms.

Even if the phone wasn't completely terrible, it has sold so little that I would not be surprised if Amazon drops support for it within a year. You'd be much better off with a Windows Phone.

It doesn't help that it's locked to AT&T and has the same subsidized price as the iPhone, S5, etc.

One article I read said Amazon has sold about 35,000 of them total. Pretty severe floppage.

It's been marked down to $0.99 on contract.

If you don't care about GAPPS, then it probably would work. It is still android, though, just a locked up version.

OS on the Fire isn't intuitive at all. If it's anything like that, do not want.

I have a first gen Kindle Fire, and was curious about the phone. I'm not due for an upgrade until next September, so I was going to wait a year and see how it turned out, possible upgrades on the 2nd edition. Seems like no one has one. The being tied to AT&T would suck too. I've been on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon with my iPhones, and I might go back to Sprint but never to AT&T. They really limited themselves only putting it out on one carrier.
