quote:

The Kansas City Royals won 89 games during the regular season and the San Francisco Giants won 88, the fourth-fewest combined wins in World Series history

quote:

Neither the Royals nor Giants won their division, making this the second all wild-card World Series showdown and the first between two teams with fewer than 90 wins (the Angels and Giants met in 2002 but those were 99- and 95-win teams).

quote:

The Royals won just two more games than the Mariners, who had to play in the tougher division with the Angels and A's. The Giants had the fifth-best record in the National League and got to play in a division with the two worst teams in baseball. Do they win 88 games if they're in the NL Central? The Giants had the easiest strength of schedule in the majors.

quote:

So this is arguably the worst World Series matchup ever, as far as quality of teams. Giants fans can disagree, but if this was a great team, why did the Giants put themselves in the dice roll of a wild-card game? Why couldn't they beat out the Dodgers for the division title? Royals fans can point out that their team has won eight postseason games in a row, but if the Royals are a great team, why did they put themselves in the dice roll of a wild-card game? Why couldn't they win two more games and beat out the Tigers for the division title?

quote:

In the regular season, the Royals were ninth in the AL in runs scored and fourth in runs allowed. The Giants were fifth in runs scored and sixth in runs allowed. There's a reason neither team won 90 games.

However the article does say:
quote:

Just give me six or seven games with more Lorenzo Cain diving catches and Travis Ishikawa home runs and Royals stolen bases and Madison Bumgarner sliders and Yordano Ventura fastballs and Buster Posey clutch hits. Do that and I'll forget that neither of these teams won 90 games.

I agree

so he is going to discount their 8 playoff wins when harping on their total wins...who gives a shite about regular season at this point

Well this baseball playoff did do one thing, a team that would of never had an opportunity to even be in the playoffs got hot at the right time.
This is something a lot of purist and others complained about when the 2nd WC team was added.

Exactly. Even if you don't give additional weight to playoff games(which is ridiculous), you still have to adjust their record. Any team's winning record is going to be better if they win 8 straight. Even on a 162 game same size

well 162 > 8

the regular season is a much better indicator of how good a team is (or isn't)

i will counter this quite easily

give them the free 8 extra games (so they're at 170) and make everyone else have just 162...they still only have what? 96 wins? with a huge advantage

Who cares how good they were in the regular season? They are playing their best baseball at the right time. That's all that matters

Nothing to be bitter about, we have the far better team with a far worse manager

MLB should I institute a selection committee like CFB playoffs. Just let a bunch of random people choose who will make the playoffs.

Teams are clustered much closer together than they were in the past. Thread on here a few weeks ago about how there are so fewer teams with 100+ wins or losses. Doesn't mean that the 4th best regular season team is worse than they were 15 or 20 years ago.

You don't just luck into a WS appearance. These are clearly the two best teams in baseball right now. They've dominated the postseason

Another reason why I don't take ESPN's reporting in sports seriously anymore. The Royals run to the WS is nothing short of amazing considering how they were bottom feeders twenty-ish years ago up until five or six years. That's not a good enough story for ESPN's writers to capitalize on? The Giants forming a modern baseball dynasty isn't good enough?

Oh that's right. ESPN wants Jeter. frick 'em.

Disagree.....I don't care about regular season, and I root for the underdog/embattled franchise/historically bad programs. I am just glad it's not the Yankees. Let's go royals!

If an 85 win Yankees team would be playing an 84 win Dodger team, ESPN would call this THE GREATEST WORLD SERIES EVER.

Then what is the point of having playoffs? Just give the trophy to the team with the best regular season record

We live in the NFL's world. When Wild Card teams like the Giants and Steelers won Super Bowls ESPN wasn't trashing it.

If the Wild Card team that made it to the Super Bowl was the Panthers or Texans instead of the New York team, they would be trashing it.
