Quite possibly one of the shittiest motor ever made. Break constantly and eat lower units. They haul arse though...for the 30 minutes they work.

Best outboard engine ever. So much better than anything Yamaha has ever made.

Worst Motor ever built. Mercury's reputation still hasn't recovered from it.

Depends...they have a reputation for eating up lowers. That said, the actual engine has a decent reputation as compared to others. Mercury developed a heavy duty lower unit and it has apparently solved some problems. Yamaha is not without issues either...especially on their F350 which has to have its flywheel replaced every 300 hours.

That must suck for all the big boys with 75K of them on the back of their mackerel boats.
Our Yammy 225 has been running like a top for 9 years.

I know two that have had them, both brand new. One sold his within 3 months and the other should likely do the same as its stranded him 3 times and it's only 6 months old.
