Just got rid of a 2005 Z71 Tahoe for a Mercedes ML350 for the wife.
We were already planning on getting a new SUV and she immediately wanted a new Tahoe. I priced a few others just to check the field (Enclave, MDX, Infiniti, Grand Cherokee, etc).
By the time you get done pimping any of these out on paper, they were all near or above $50k.
There is no way in hell I was going to spend that much on some of those models.
I got a new ML350 for $51k OTD and love it. Tank fillup is $72 for premium gas, but the mileage is almost double my old Tahoe (especially highway).
It doesnt have the third row seat that she was wanting, but we took a trip a few weeks ago and had plenty of cargo space.

suv's are just expensive all around
i know its not what you're looking for but we ended up getting a very well equipped explorer for about 32k
the third row is nice to have when we need it, but when we don't, we always take my truck
its so much more comfortable IMO....the explorer feels more like a car space wise, and I'm not a fan even though it does ride well
went on a work trip in a minivan the other day.....i'm not kidding, if there wasnt such a stigma surrounding minivans, they are some of the most comfortable vehicles to drive/ride in

The luxury makes are not priced much (if any) higher than the more pedestrian ones.
A Hyundai Sante Fe with leather, etc. costs as much as an Acura RDX. And let's not discuss the new Tahoe.

Well this just isn't true. Unless a $5k difference=cost as much.

just better build quality
I doubt there is much reality here. Toyota builds their luxury/non luxury on the same drivetrain/chassis, so it's essentially the same vehicle under the hood.

This is why I'm trying to talk my wife into driving a minivan for our next vehicle. They are just much more economical when you have kids IMO.

The Honda minivans are pretty nifty vehicles. Lots of great features.

we currently have a 2012 Tahoe and it's been a great SUV. hauls a family of 4 around and pulls a boat nicely. We just couldn't stomach the extra money for a "luxury" SUV.
I will tell you based on personal experience and a friend who is a mechanic....don't buy the Land Rover if reliability is important to you. Jeep doesn't have the best rep either, but repairs are more reasonable and I didn't have major problems w/ mine until it hit over 100k miles

Loving the 2014 Acura MDX I bought. That thing is crazy nice/smooth. Sometimes my wife waves to me from it as she passes me on her way to the gym while I'm in my 15 year old beater.
