SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A caught-on-camera dispute between some tech industry employees and a group of teens at a the San Francisco Mission Playground soccer field has sparked calls for change in San Francisco Park’s and Recreation policies.

In occasionally heated moments, the September 25, 2014 video shows a group of Dropbox employees trying to get a group of kids to move after they reserved the field. The techies had a permit from Parks and Rec to use the facility at the time of the dispute, but locals said there is a tradition of pickup games during those hours, and that the facility could not be “bought.”

The video depicts a spectrum of emotions from territorial issues, to a proposal that the techies share the field, and even play soccer with the locals. It’s just the latest chapter in the city’s ongoing struggle with gentrification, and the influx of tech workers that some say is eroding the traditions of San Francisco neighborhoods.

If they reserved the field then they should get the field.

I had reserved a softball field for a co-ed softball team I played on to practice. We had an All-star women's team arrive planning to practice there too. We had the "rights" to the field & they knew it. We decided to play a game. They beat the crap out of our team but we both got more work in than we would have.

That's an amicable solution, and y'all probably had more fun than you would have just practicing.

And what exactly are these traditions? I lived in the bay area for ten years and struggle to come up with a dozen people I knew who were from SF proper. There might have been neighborhood traditions and there might be again, but it's hard to believe the current population has established any traditions.

The Mission (until about three years ago) used to be a very poor neighborhood with a large Latino and homeless population and its traditions tend to include alcoholism, drug addiction, public urination, public sex, and gang violence. The "locals" are pissed that they're being forced out of apartment that they've been renting illegally for the past 20 years to make room for the revitalization.

It doesn't take long for the tradition of mouching and getting offended when someone calls you out on it to take root.

Well, according to the local parks department, it can be bought for $27/hr plus $11 for lights. In SF, that equates to $3 USD.

Could those techies have called the cops to clear out the kids? I like the guy with the white sheet of paper, he is like - why is this happening? I don't understand. I have a paper here that says we can play here from 7-8 pm. Then he turns around to the camera man and says why are you recoding this? He is just so baffled

I don't understand why Dropbox had to apologize for its employees though. None of them crossed the line. They were very respectful. They just wanted to play during their allocated hour.

A friend had a similar thing at a Party at a shelter in City Park. Some people had set up there, and he came up and said "look you need a permit" But there was no altercation the people knew that. Got up and went to a different shelter. Not like the Peristyle or anything, just one of those ones off the Roosevelt quad.

I like dropbox and they reserved the field.

How many "true" locals does SF have anyway?

If it's a public park and there are no employees on duty at the time(seems like there weren't any), how could it ever be enforced? Either make it pay for play and have someone facilitating it, or just make it free and first come/first serve with no staff. Sounds like the parks dept wants both.

like transplants from other areas, hippies, drugs, and just a general lack of accountability for anything?
