Guardians of the Galaxy has only just debuted in China, so it should be very interesting to see how much its run there adds to its eventual box office haul and where it will ultimately place when compared to this year's other three big Marvel movies; Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($708 million), and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($746 million).

Good. Now they can leak a decent copy to the internet.

I haven't seen Guardians of Galaxy yet, and I saw Man of Steel.

Guardians of the Galaxy might be the surprise movie of the last couple of years. It looked dead on arrival when it was first announced and I think a lot of folks, myself included, thought it would tank.
Well it didn't. It had a great mix of humor, action, and drama. There might have been "better" movies to come out this year... but I am not sure there has been a more enjoyable movie.

I really liked Man of Steel, but Guardians of The Galaxy absolutely blew it away.

GOG was worth the 40 bucks I spent at the movies.
I rarely say that.

I saw Man of Steel 3 times in the theater but have yet to see Guardians of the Galaxy. Man of Steel is one of my top 5 movies of any genre and favorite comic book movie. I don't understand how a completely unknown property surpassed it.

Word of mouth. One was great and the other was mediocre.

No one could get past their pre-conceived notions of what Superman is supposed to be and they wanted the humor of the Avengers. No one had any preconceived notions about Guardians of the Galaxy and apparently it had lots of humor. I prefer the serious superhero movie personally.

I cant wait for GOTG. OnDemand is usually my first look at the movies and is way faster than RedBox and whatnot, so I'm really looking forward to it

Man of Steel is one of my favorite superhero movies and so is GOTG. Superman shouldve done better .

There were no preconceived notions. No hype. It was a blank slate that completely delivered.

Because Man of Steel was joyless. It's not even about serious vs. non-serious. Man of Steel just took itself way to seriously. Tried to be The Dark Knight and collapsed under the weight of those expectations. It had a lot of good pieces but the final product was neither heroic, nor fun, nor meaningful/impactful. If you want a serious film, you have to execute much better than MoS did. If there were more weight in the choices, more thoughtfulness in the outcome, it might have worked better.

You just can't let it go.

DC is generally less humorous. Geoff Johns once said that DC characters are "gods" Marvel's are "guys off the street".
That being said, I agree with the preconceived notion about Superman. He actually kills all the time.
There is actually a little bit of symbolism in how MoS was seen by some. The general audience typically thinks Superman = Clark Kent=nerdy guy who doesn't get the girl, but as the audience we know the truth about ol' Clark. He's a god. We don't get how no one else around him-Lois,Perry,Lex,etc. can tell they are one and the same (I'm talking general Superman portrayals). It's kind of silly that glasses can fool them.
MoS actually sheds the "Clark" persona( not the name) to the audience and gives you Kal-El-Superman in his true form. The audience is actually fooled by the "Clark" persona. Clark didn't wear glasses until the end. He never put on that mask. Essentially Clark wasn't "Clark" to many. "Clark" would never behave like he did in the film.
As he is now integrated into the Daily Planet and his identity is at greater risk than ever-you'll probably see a little more "Clark" than in MoS.
All that aside, I enjoyed both but understand GotG,as great as it was, benefited greatly from being at the tail of the summer cycle and it's competition was extremely weak.
