Looking at getting a Vanguard Series sporter Win Mag .270. Always have admired them at the camp. Anyone own one? Thoughts can you tell the difference?

I have one in 25.06. Great gun. Seems to be heavier than other manufactures but its a very good shooter.

Out of complete honesty Weatherbys are great gorgeous rifles however I can tell you that I have seen a lot more accurate 700's shooting hand loads or premium over the counter loads. If you are just looking for a hand me down then by all means. If you are looking for weight, performance, and a true tool of accuracy I would get something different.

This. Give me a 700 or a tikka shooting Nosler. Especially the Sendero in 300RUM or the stainless CDL

Great hand-me-down though

They are not all created equal. Sometime in the 60s they switched production from Germany to Japan.
We have a 1960 or so Weatherby Mark V 270 magnum that is a heavy, kicking beast- lots of recoil but pretty dang accurate. Can't speak firsthand for the machining on the Jap models but the German ones are a work of art, just heavy

I dislike Japanese made guns. I would get a Tikka or Savage anyday before I got a Weatherby or Browning. If it doesnt bother you, then they are fine.

I have a .270 weatherby van win mag w/ a modertly priced nikon scope. It shoots nice and flat. I've hit center on 2 deer with it; one @ 130 yds & the other @ 80 yds. Great gun for the price. I've owned it for 6 years and shoot it a few times a year.

What? That statement made no sense. Not only that, if he is looking for a .270 I don't think he wants what the .30-378 has to offer.

When the Mark V weatherbys were made they were top of the line and one of the first to guarantee their group. The Vanguard is not near the gun the Mark V are. As mentioned in other posts here you can prob get a rem 700 to shoot better than a vanguard. It has the weatherby name for reputation. Pick what you like though.

I had a vanguard s2 in 257 weatherby mag and I loved it. It was the most accurate gun I've ever shot. I still kick myself for selling that gun.

To each his own, but buying a Vanguard rifle chambered for anything besides a Weatherby Magnum is just wrong. It says so in the Bible
