USC had some good coaches in the past, but Carroll was incredible there.

Others:
Barry Alvarez, WISC.
Jim Harbaugh ,, Stanford. Might be too soon, but JH did an incredible job for that program.

I edited Alvarez in while you posted. Harbaugh is not bad.

Gary Patterson- Tcu.

That one might not be a popular choice.

Maybe Urban at Utah. He started them up and they turned the momentum they gained into two BCS bowl wins and a major conference invite.

Weren't the Sooners already relevant before Switzer? Was anyone between him and Wilkinson?

Would Chris Peterson make the list?

I thought about listing Peterson, but I figured since Boise State wasn't all that respected by message board fans and they weren't invited into a major conference it wouldn't go over well.

I don't think so. Hawkins had that program going before he left for Colorado. I think a bit similar to Saban/Miles

I think the list is very good. For me, probably Schnellenberger and Synder top the list. Miami and K-State were horrible football programs until they came along. HS at least at a great talent pool in Miami that apparently no one else recruited until he came along. What Synder has done in the middle of nowhere Kansas is remarkable

Joe Pa was hired in 65, so 49 years ago. Say what you want to about his later, more senile years, but the man built PSU up like no one ever thought possible.

Pete Carrol was huge, they were coming off the Hackett disaster and probation era of Tollner and Robinson. Tucked between those eras were okay but not great.

Hayden Frye at Iowa. Iowa was a garbage program who became relevant and competed for Rose Bowls.

Bobby Bowden obviously

Howard Schnellenburger at Louisville and Miami

Snyder

Glen Mason at KU they were god awful and he got them to top 10. He would've never left if Roy would have been a team player.

Gary Barnett Northwestern went from laughing stock to Rose bowls also they still compete he changed the culture.

Adding JoePa to the list. I thought he was over 50.

Briles and Harbaugh maybe. If Baylor is this good in say two years when Texas is back, I say yes.

McCartney only had from 88-92 as a solid run. Not sure that is long term.

But Colorado was playing in BCS bowls as late as 2003, I believe.

That was 10 years after McCartney and they had reworked the program.

CU did not keep his formula.

IIRC McCartney left after a 11 win season, but there was trouble brewing about his teams and family life.
