Seems like a major step towards a Type-1 diabetes cure coming from stem-cell research at Harvard.

Given the number of people who suffer from the disease, I don't think the claim in the article that this breakthrough compares to the emergence of antibiotics is too hyperbolic.

Please note, this post is not intended to engender any debate regarding the morality or ethics of stem-cell research. Just positive Friday news to share.

One of the things about diabetes that amazes me is just how many people it kills (around 250k in America alone) and yet how little the government funds diabetes research. We spend 3 times as much on AIDS research yet AIDS kills a fraction that diabetes does.

NIH spending

I saw that article on newser and was going to link it after class. What is weird is that we just went over the process that he was using today in class.

No. Your body destroys your own cells that secrete insulin.

No. It's the type of diabetes where the body's immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas.

probably not (but I haven't read the whole study and look into the results in detail) type II diabetes and type I diabetes have different mechanisms.

Different set of problems with type 2. There is plenty of insulin but cells are resistant to its action.

Yes, diabetes can be devastating, especially for the lower-income population. It's not an infectious disease, it is manageable, and has been treatable for years, so the push to find a cure is somewhat mitigated.

Kudos to the lead researcher referenced in the article for using his expertise to tackle something personal to him. That's often the way great things happen.

Not to go all TxTiger on conspiracy theories, but the cynic in me just hopes big pharma doesn't fight this too hard. They make billions yearly from diabetes treatment products and to lose that market could wreck their balance sheet in the short-term.

Well, this is for type I DM. DMII is probably the larger of the two as far as money making goes.

Is the diabetes death rate # separated into type 1 and type 2?

Because I think it should be since type 2 is pretty much self induced.

You should also add "aka the sugah" to the title so everyone knows what diabetes is.

As far as numbers go, type 2 is way more common than type 1 and will remain a big problem (money maker).

Agreed, but insulin for type-1 is still not cheap.

If it's not clear from my posts in this thread, I'm a type-1 diabetic, so I am personally optimistic about this. I also spend thousands a year on diabetes treatment, and that's with fantastic insurance and no complications, so I can attest that big pharma will take a hit if type-1 diabetes goes away.
