Growing up winters were for hunting only. As I get a little older I'm realizing that bass fever still lingers and hunting season just doesn't excite me quite as much as it used to. How's the catch in tbe winter months? Is it worth hitting the water? Are they in shallows, deep water?

OK I understand that winters in Tampa is not the same as winters in LA but yes I'll bass fish all year.

One good cold bluebird morning in will cure your fever. As for the fishing depth it really dependent on location. What would be considered deep in Bayou Black would be considered shallow in Toledo Bend.

I do... nice to be on the water with hardly any crowds.

Invest in a nice rain/wind suit and go fish. It can be tough at times but the fish still have to eat.

Fish will be all over just depends where you are fishing. The bite isn't as aggressive as the warmer months so slower presentations tend to work the best.

IIRC Lake Cleco is a warm water lake and may have good fishing year round, but I also think it's scheduled for a drawdown.

I love it but don't do it enough.

Most of the time when you find they are stacked up and you will catch a pile of them.

Depends on the temp. Early winter, like up to the first of Dec they will be on the channel edges in 3 to 8ft of water. When it gets cold like in Jan they will go deep but there are always fish shallow. I caught an 8lb bass in 4ft of water and the water temp was 45deg. About an hour later I was catching 5 to 7 pounders in 40 ft of water.

Rocks are great to fish because the sun warms them up and they are natural fish attractors.

if you enjoy it then get out there and do it. my main advice would be this: having the right gear is a game changer and will turn a bad experience into a good one. get a windbreaker jacket, good gloves and bring some hot hands hand warmers. do whatever it takes to keep comfortable or you won't enjoy it long enough to get good at it.

the fish gotta eat sometime, so yes there are ways to catch fish in cold weather. my main advice would be to fish slower and pay attention to the temperature reading on your depthfinder. there may be a canal nearby with water temp 5 degrees warmer than the surrounding area that will hold fish that are biting.

Definitely! Since we got a camp at Toledo I haven't been deer hunting. I just go up there and fish.

They can be found shallow year round, me and my dad destroyed them this past January and February in 3-10 feet of water on squarebills and spinnerbaits. Water temp was in the 40s and 50s.

They will stack up offshore big time though. You can find a couple schools and pull 30 up in no time. Jigging spoons are my favorite bait for the cold weather deep bass. But a shaky head with a finesse or trick worm will catch em, too.

More and more each year. Some of my best trips to Toledo and Indian Creek have been in the winter. They start biting well before 95% of fisherman think they do.

Low winter tides in Venice normally equal awesome bass fishing. We tend to catch our limits of bass in an hour or so on really low tides then go shoot our ducks when the tide starts coming up. Nice way to spend a morning typically.

If I wasn't so consumed with killing deer I would fish all year. I have had excellent trips in the winter. I remember as a child being in the Basin with my father and uncle during January. It was so cold we stopped and built a fire on a levee to warm up at one point. I also specifically remember them making me lay down in the bottom of the boat when dogs were running a deer by us and hunters were shooting at it. The way I see it, fishing a worm for 6 hrs without a bite in the winter is still 3x better than sitting at home.

I've had to dip my guides on the water to break the ice at CLECO.

I love cold weather fishing, had some of my best days bundled up. Invest in some good cold weather gear and hand warmers. You can find bass shallow year round, but there are better patterns depending on location and conditions. I fish cenla, and typically do much better in the colder months than the warmer ones. Shouldnt be long and they will start stacking up in the creeks loading up for winter.
