And honestly I think the last 5 years have been the best 5 years of music in my life. just so much diversity, and its easy to find new stuff.

Possibly the worst 5 of mine. I've been going to the past to find new music. My last purchase was a song from 2007. Before that it was mid 70s

Agree with whoever said the 80s was full of shite but also had some great stuff, you just had to work a little bit to find it.

I don't think the greatness/shitness ratio of the 80s was much different from the 70s though.
Music kinda died for me at some point during the 90s

I don't know if the music of the 80's was worse or if it was just that radio got worse. The decline of AOR was bad for me because I never seem to like the songs that bands release as designated radio "hits". So at some point I just started making my own mix tapes of songs I liked and stopped listening to the radio. When I was able to do the same thing with CDs, things got even better. Now I have a big iPod in the car and it might be years before I hear the same song again.

I think the 80s are the single greatest decade of pop music. And for the exact opposite reason, it's amazing depth. I mean, you had really great pop going on (Madonna, Lauper, Prince) while at the same time you had a spectacular underground scene (everything on SST and Dischord). MTV allowed for all sorts of wierd things to crash the mainstream, before the labels figured out how to put a stopped on it. I mean, some really bizarre crap became wildly popular (in what other decade does Frankie Goes to Hollywood have a top ten hit?)

All of this.

As a medium of consuming and discovering music, radio has to be at its all time lowest right now.

You get no argument from me on that point. I'm not even really a fan of Sirius/XM even though I've got a subscription.

I'd be lost with out it. That song I downloaded from 2007 last night would have never been known to me without The Loft. I had never even heard of the artist.

Flock of Seagulls played at the Tiger once. I was there.

While I wouldn't consider the Smithereens new wave, I thoroughly enjoy them and still catch them when they play up here. My wife is friends with a couple of them.

The Pretenders
New Order
Depeche Mode
Communards
Yaz
Pylon
Love and Rockets
Bauhaus

Well said. Lots of good stuff in the 80s. Do they have an 80s channel on XM? I listen to XMU and the Alternative channel mostly.

In GOAT contention and guaranteed HOFer, had Honeymann-Scott and Farner (but especially H-S) not overdosed.

"I Ran" is the greatest new wave song and one of the greatest one hit wonders ever
I think What I Like About You is a better song, and it will certainly get more play than I Ran in the future.

Nobody has mentioned Devo as a new wave band, but they were one of my favorites.

James Honeyman-Scott was another guitarist who was perfect for his group. And I think the bassist's name was Farndon, was it not?
