It was out there. You just had to work to find it. WAY better music than the 90s IMHO. Almost as good as the 70s.

And I say that knowing that I hated and still hate a lot of the stuff many people like. Pretty much everything played on The 80s. Blech!

I thought the 80s were incredible and definitely the foundation for much of my musical taste...

To me, the issue was that big media like MTV or Rolling Stone magazine, didn't really represent what was really great in that era... Or relegated it to 2 hours on a sunday night or the back pages.. It was much harder to find pre-internet (conversely, the days we live into today with the internet, has flooded the market with a ton of average music)...

Also, there are a lot of great records or songs that get lost in the over production that was popular during that era...

I agree with you on MTV as it went along. Early on though, they played more hard to find stuff than pop. It was my primary source for new and obscure music. I mean, I found out about this on Mtv, and not because of 120 Minutes. I think Michael jackson ruined all that.

This what I think when I think 80's new wave.

The The - This Is The Day

A lot of the others listed sound more like this 70's UK band than new wave to me.

Fair enough.. to your point, in the beginning they were more of an oddball concept that took a bit to catch on...

Our cable company got it right as I was learning that there was music other than top 40. I would sit in front of the TV for hours. My mother was worried.

I completely agree. New wave sort of turned into synth pop but it lost the edge that new wave got from punk. I was glad when the 90's came along.

Mine used to say if I could remember my studies, like I did the words to every song, Id have straight As...

It's amazing how many lyrics I know to 80s songs, that I don't even like...

Probably. They were transitional between new wave and synth pop. I liked them too.

Question: how about Wall of Voodoo? Because I'm a fan.

well i grew up in the 80s, and I have a bit of nostalagia for bits and pieces of it.

I mean, the 80s has a lot of great music. I loved quite a bit of it at the time, but upon reflection I think it was a little thin.

the 90s were great until about 98 or so, then it went downhill.

And honestly I think the last 5 years have been the best 5 years of music in my life. just so much diversity, and its easy to find new stuff.

I think the 80s are the single greatest decade of pop music. And for the exact opposite reason, it's amazing depth. I mean, you had really great pop going on (Madonna, Lauper, Prince) while at the same time you had a spectacular underground scene (everything on SST and Dischord). MTV allowed for all sorts of wierd things to crash the mainstream, before the labels figured out how to put a stopped on it. I mean, some really bizarre crap became wildly popular (in what other decade does Frankie Goes to Hollywood have a top ten hit?)

You have the American DIY scene exploding, college rock is born, hip hop is essentially invented, and all the while, mainstream radio wasn't terrible. The only thing which sucked in this era were 60s dinosaur acts who really adjusted poorly to the new era and hair metal, which was unfortunately far more popular than anyone under 30 can possibly imagine.

I love the 80s for its dynamism.
