I've seriously been thinking about just loading all my stuff in my truck and moving somewhere. I'm 31, single, no kids and no crippling debt, truck is paid for and my student loan is minimal (7k left, payments are 180 a month), credit card has 0 balance. My biggest reason is unemployment and wanting a new start somewhere. I've intervied for a lot of jobs but no offers.

My question is, has anybody just packed up and moved with no plan once you got there, where did you go, how did you choose where you went and how did it turn out.

Go ask a homeless person. They would know more about it than anyone else.

Might want to chill then. Use the internet to find a job first.

mine too.

it was lonely at first, but as long as you arent a total wierdo, you should have no problem making at least one friend. the rest is downhill.

moved in with my brother in Huntsville for a few months while job hunting. found a job in Chattanooga and it turned out great. been here over 3 years and still love the area.

Yes.

Found an apartment in a few days--renting a room from a few Asian chicks, got my first job, and got my first place.

I was twenty-three, fresh out of school.

Weird- I also have this question and I am in the exact same situation as you (age, single, no kids, no crippling debt, etc.).

I want to move somewhere new, but I would like to do it as soon as possible without necessarily finding a job first.

Yes. After I graduated LSU, hung around BR for a few months and just said screw it and sold what I had and packed my car up with clothes and moved to Las Vegas.

Rented a place online before I left. Got some BS jobs at first to hold me over until I could find something I liked.

Ended up staying in Vegas for 6 years and met my wife. Don't regret it one bit, in fact, I regret taking a job back in BR. I should of stayed out that way. Looking to move back early next year.

Made some good friends as well that I still see and keep in touch with all the time.

Twice and I don't recommend it

I had enough money saved up and found a room to rent out on Craigslist in both places, and ended up finding jobs in both places, but its better to have something lined up and your own place to live

Moved to Jacksonville in 2011 after graduating because 3 companies out there I was trying to get onto and thought moving there would increase my chances. Had about $5,000 in savings. Lasted a couple months, rented out an apartment from a guy finishing his lease. But I didn't get hired, and moved back to Texas to regroup.

Moved to Las Vegas in 2012. Different story here - I worked for a company and wanted to transfer to their Las Vegas branch. But they had no openings but said they only hire Las Vegas locals and not from outside. So I moved there, again with about $5,000, and did the same thing I did in Jacksonville: rented out a room in a house. It was fun, and I ended up getting hired on at the branch there, but eventually found out how much I hated the job and there are just too many distractions in Las Vegas. Lasted about a year there. I love the city and want to return one day, but when I return I want to be doing a job I like and not hate.

Come down here to the SE Houston (or Ship Channel)area. Plenty of jobs here.

Get one of those monthly rental places with a kitchenette...they are generally less than $1000/mo on a monthly contract. There is a good one on Bay Area Blvd in Webster TX.

Get set up on the Houston Chronicle Classified Jobs section...it should connect you to Monster jobs too. Get the Green Sheet and other similar classified papers.

Have your resume ready to go and a nice suit. Make sure you are as clean cut as possible.

PS I'm a PhD scientist too.

I moved to NYC when I was 25 without a job. One of the best decisions I ever made. Ultimately moved back to Louisiana, but it really changed who I am and how I view the world, career, etc.

I also moved to California 2 weeks after graduating college, but I had a job I was starting there.
