my wife and I are planning a jump to Boston next year too.

I freaking loved Boston and can definitely see myself ending up back in that area. They have a decent LSU Alumni Association that you should hook up with. Good luck to you and your wife!!

The plan would be to move somewhere in hopes of finding something to pay the bills rather quickly and then looking for better jobs. There would be a plan, just no job when I got there.

From experience, Vegas has a ton of jobs you could get to pay the bills with no experience until you find something.

Valet, waiter, sportsbook ticket guy, etc..

Not sure what would be out that way for your degree, but lots of jobs like those at casinos and the are always hiring.

Hell my wife uncle is a head waiter at one of the Wynns resturants and makes crazy money.

I'm in this exact situation (although currently employed and have a mortgage) and considering cashing out and heading to L.A.

Alaska has always been a place that intrigues me, how hard was it to find a job when you got there?

Starting salary at these positions is $12 or 13/ hour. They aren't going to hire a PhD for those positions because they know he won't last long there.

Be suprised at how many Valet and waiters at high end places have degrees. Myself included at the time. I started taking phone calls for reservations just to have a job when I moved. I got promoted many times in a pretty quick manner too.

Easy. Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks are relatively booming.

I'm not disputing you and glad you were able to get those positions...but guessing you don't have a PhD and from my experience they won't hire a PhD for a position like that if they know you have one.

He sounds like a perfect USDA job candidate...it takes typically 6 - 12 months to get hired with the Govt for one of their career positions. NOLA has the USDA research lab in Lakeview area by UNO.

I've applied for a shite ton of usda jobs, never heard back from any of them, even if I called to check on the hiring status, they never returned my calls.

Several of them have been in Louisiana actually.

Sorry to hear that. It takes a shite ton of time for them to go through their hiring processes. I've been called in for on sites twice but then took other positions before they contacted me again with further interest...so I've never worked for the USDA.

I'm a vet...maybe that got me through some of their earlier screening (although with a professional position it isn't supposed to matter).

I'm telling you...if you just want to earn some jack to keep afloat while career positions come available you should come to Houston.

Where at in M'sippi? I spent some time in H'burg.

I'm in the exact same situation only I do have crippling student loan debt along with a 110 pound dog and a cat. Been applying for a while and finally hit the "frick it" button.

Got money saved up and, unless I find something before, I'm going to move to either Dallas or Houston in January.

I'd kind of prefer Houston, but the housing is WAY more there. I've got time to piece the puzzle together, but the decision has been made.

Wish you the best of luck. I'm nervous as frick about it but comfort breeds apathy.

Gotta make it happen myself.
