Ok I just moved to Montana, and I’m looking to finally get my own setup. I always rented in the past but seems like a waste of money now. I’m looking at all these different board and don’t have a clue what to look for as I don’t really know the terms. What does camber mean and what is it good for?

I don’t really do park/rail stuff. I like anything off-piste/powder, but I do like hitting some jumps and like something with a little spring in it for pop-ups. Anyone know what sort of board I should look for for that?

TIA!

going to be interesting to see how many people on the board have that kind of expertise. I'm sure there are a couple though.

OTers ski. Snowboarding is trashy.

I do have my own skis. Similar to these, different color though.

Depends on weight and height. There are online calculators. Find a good "all mountain" board. You should be good to go. Where in Montana did you move? I should start building there in the spring. Gnu and lib tech make good all mountain boards as well as burton and the other house hold brands. I have a GNU impossible arse pickle fwiw

Go to a store and demo some boards... That's the best way to do it. I road one I loved for a week and asked them if I could buy. It's hard to tell if you like a board by just looking at it.

While I've only skied my whole life... (26+ years)... camber is the lean on the binding on the board.

It depends on how you ride; regular or goofy. It's a preference thing.. and it can be adjusted with minimal effort.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of insight into snowboards. I sold skis up north for several years... I'd love to get you into some parabolic volkl sticks.

eta: call a mountain close by and ask them when they're having their next 'demo day' and go ride a few different boards.

Maybe you should head to your local shop and not strangers on a Louisiana based message board. Just a thought.

I did alot of research a few years ago and ended up going with a GNU Carbon Credit. It's a good all mountain board and has held up well for 2x/year trips. Not sure how it would do for an every weekend board.

I just considered making the move to ownership rather than rental but renting made too much sense. If Iived near a legit place though I would totally buy. I was looking primarily at a Burton All Mountain set up though because that's the only brand I have experience with.

The subreddit r/snowboarding has lots of good info. If you are going to board a lot this year, you could also do a season long rental from a sports store in town, and it would be much less than renting by the day.

Keep in mind you have to get the board, the bindings, and the boots..this can run amock on your bill.

I can't help you, I've always rented, but you would probably find much better advice somewhere else. This board is populated by people who live in a state without snow or mountains, and rent skis.

Yeah, skiing is much easier to learn but they're both fun as hell. Learning to snowboard is not for the faint of heart.
