Maybe the car broke down all the time, poor gas mileage, etc etc...

Yes, Audi TT. Piece of crap, was in the shop once every two months. But it would do 135 easy...

In November of 2012 I bought a 2013 Ford Escape with the Titanium package. I really liked the look of the vehicle, the gas mileage, and all the high tech bells and whistles. With the Eco-Boost turbo it even had some zip. In the year that I had it I had the transmission go out (covered under warranty but 5 weeks in the shop), a electrical harness go bad (at 38K miles so it was outside the bumper to bumper and paid for out of pocket), 4 recalls, and an issue with intermittant stalling that Ford can't replicate. After it stalled on me while pulling through an intersection I traded that POS in for a Toyota Tacoma. That Ford was the first new car I've ever bought, and maybe the last.

The two vehicles I have now are awesome, I can work on them myself due to their age and parts are cheap.

My first car (that I didn't buy), while awesome, broke down all the fricking time and parts/labor were expensive. I don't think it stayed on the road more than a month or two at a time.

ETA: Current vehicles are a '66 Chevrolet C150 and a '77 Mercedes 300D. First vehicle was a '91 Land Rover Defender.

Just bought a 2013 Sonata GLS from a company that buys cars at auctions. I believe I:
• Got a good car
• Paid a fair price
• Avoided the stress and hassle of schlepping around to different dealers
• Last but not least, had the car inspected bumper-to-bumper by my own mechanic on their site. This was big in terms of my comfort level with the car.

A very good experience, although I'm only 2 weeks into owning the car.

Not while it was in the shop.

Screw owning and relying on temperamental machinery.

My opinion, the Japanese are as good as it gets at building complex but reliable machinery. I have never owned a Japanese-built product which I regretted getting. That's at least eight cars, etc...

Not my most recent one. 420hp, 12 second 1/4 mile, surprisingly big trunk, and 24mpg combined so far with me driving like an a-hole.

I love my car. Except when I have to take it in for repairs/maintenance.

We love my wifes Jetta TDI, but we just had a kid, and getting a car seat in the back isn't the easiest.

Bought a 2011 f150 4x4 a few months ago and the some bitch acts like it wants to die at idle, there is a loss of power and the engine clatters. It's under warranty but shite I've only had it for 10k miles. From what I've read on the web, it doesn't look good.

I had an '08 Prius bought when gas was a little more expensive.

It didn't get 50 mph.

I traded it in for an '08 2 door Civic (which I totalled).

I replaced the wrecked with '09 2 door Civic which I still have.

Back to the Prius. It is still on the dealer's website where I traded it in.

I regret buying my Honda Element.

It's got lousy gas mileage, terrible ergonomics, and poor interior build quality. Little wonder Honda discontinued the Element in 2011.

That this styling(?) doesn't scare you off all by itself is a you problem, not a Japanese motor industry problem.

I'll admit that I have an 08 Honda Element SC that I bought new. My wife drives it. We have 150,000 no-problem miles. Hoping for around 200,000 before I retire it.

I have a 2011 BMW X5. It's a very nice car, hauls arse, hugs the road, etc; however, it just cost too damn much. After about 6 months of owning a new car it's just transportation. Get something comfortable, reliable, and Japanese.
