OB: School me on Colt Detective Specials

Possibly looking at picking up a 1976 production Colt Detective Special in a trade. Do not yet know condition or round count. Would be primarily used as a truck/back up gun.
Anyone have experience with one? What should I be looking for? Assuming good to great condition what would be the ball park value?
Trying to decide between this and a S&W 442.

Depending on condition those can be pretty valuable guns. Definitely seem to hold value well too.

What are you trading for? I would buy it off the guy. If the condition is good to great I would go ahead an shoot it a bit then clean and oil and keep in safe. This is not a truck gun IMO.
IMO, the older Colt wheel guns and snakes will continue to increase in value. Get it, enjoy, and keep it safe. Buy a Smith for you truck.

Duly noted. I was looking for a shooter (Airweight or LCR) and this is what was offered to me in a trade. I do not have any pictures or details on the Colt, it could have been sitting at the bottom of a lake for a couple years for all I know.
Good information so far. Thanks y'all. I will update later when I know more.

It's a 6 shooter.
Eta: It's my understanding they are pretty collectible.

Great revolver. Bought one in 1976 when I joined state police. Was a great off-duty gun. I was stupid and sold it. At the same time I was offered a nickel S/W Mdl 19 for $123 thru the state under payroll deduction($5 a check) or a Python for $249. Being a broke-arse rookie I bought the Smith!

6 shots
All steel
Shrouded barrel
Built on Colt's D-frame which uses old Colt v-spring action (scaled design like the Python)
Hand fitted action (not to Python level)
Would have come with non-medallion target walnut stocks
Blue or nickel finish
DA pull feels completely different than a S&W
Replacement parts are hard to find
Gunsmiths who actually understand the gun even harder to find
Roughly the same size as a Ruger LCR
A well used DS isn't a collectible gem-I would have no problem using it as described in such condition so long as you understand the limitations above.

I just sold a 1972 Colt Det. Special in .32 cal for $425.00. It was probably around 80-85% condition, maybe a little better, with box.
I had bought one around 70% in 1989 for $150.00.
If that helps any.

If you decide the Colt is too nice for a truck gun, you might consider one of these. Used S&W Model 10 No need to go w/ a small framed gun for a truck gun.

The center console in my new vehicle has a CD player in it. I can't fit my .45. #FWP/WPP

Get something new that can shoot +p. I wouldn't in any gun from the 70s.
Also probably overpriced due to the name. Get a Smith (I've had both). Best snubby is a 357 by the way. Trigger much nicer than the j frames.
