ETA: Family of procreation comes before family of origin.

sometimes making one's personal happiness first makes for a happier you thus happier family. There is no generic answer for this. Life is a balancing act, then you get fricked and die.

Define "family"

Depends on situation..If I have my best friend dying in the hospital but my daughter has a dance recital that night I would likely be at the hospital.

Work comes first. With out that, you can't support a family.

Then no. I put my spouse and children before my siblings and parents.

No, there are times when your family can be the worst thing for you. Especially your parents and their decisions for you. Sometimes you need to be selfish and go for the goals you want instead of doing what they want.

In general though, putting family first is a good idea. Especially when it comes to children, you should try to do what's best for them. So it's a double edge sword and you should try to think of that when you decide what is best for your kids and what they want...
