Mother called me today and she is looking at getting some small Lincoln SUV. She would be trading in her Navigstor which is what she tows the boat with now. The problem is the max towing capacity of the new vehicle is 3500. The boat they pull is about 3300 but full of gas and ice chest about 3500. Does she need to get a bigger vehicle or will the one that can tow 3500 be fine?

Tow ratings are conservative on some vehicles and generous on others in my experience. They're finally starting to standardize the way they get it.

Id be comfortable with pulling at the rated weight. If she really likes the vehicle and you're really concerned, upgrade the brakes.

I'd rather not be pulling out of bad slips with an under rated vehicle

This is a towing thread, not a stopping thread.

This is the reason I have two trucks, my daily driver and my work/tow truck. I don't tow often, but when I do, by god I dont mess around.. always respect the tow

Make sure there is a transmission cooler.

does that include the trailer? if you have a wreck over your towing capacity your insurance company can tell you to go to hell

Mehhhhh

Pretty much anything has the power and an SUV will probably have better traction than a two wheel drive truck.

You also need to look at GVWR.

If mom and the gals load up the boat full of gas and a bunch of ice chests full of gin fizzes amd snacks, she's probably gonna exceed GVWR.

I'd bet she exceeds the tongue weight by a long ways.

If she gets in an accident and exceeded the tow rating, they probably won't cover at all.

She can do it for short trips, anything of length, at least add a trans cooler.

Does she plan on getting AWD? I believe the small Lincoln SUV's are front wheel drive...that could be tricky at a landing.

Yeah I'd never tow with a FWD. Maybe to pull something around the yard or at a campsite but never towing on the road with one.

I know your asking about towing, but I'd be worried about stopping all that weight when some jack leg pulls out in front of me when boat and mom is all loaded down headed to the water.

Does the boat trailer have brakes? If not, have them added and a trannies cooler added to the car.
