I've always thought radar detectors were hokey, but this past weekend I went on a 12 hour round trip with a guy who has been all about them for years.

It gave me a chance to watch him drive, for me to drive with it, and for him to discuss all of the ins and outs of how and why it works, as well as tips, tricks, and things to know about the downfalls of it.

He had an Escort Passport 9500... he said it's about $400.

Anybody else into these? I think I may be in the market...

Don't get too comfortable with one.. Lasers and instant-on will still get you. I also wonder how it would go with getting pulled over and the cop seeing that you have a radar detector.

KNOW people. If you are somewhere that you don't know people there, know people who know people there. Enough to get you out of speeding tickets. We aren't talking about getting out of a felony.

Be a true one-percenter.

just get what this guy has

Meet the guy who drove across US in 28 hours 50 minutes

quote:

"If two trucks were next to one another, we'd call to one of them," he explained. "'FedEx, this is King Trucking. I'm right next to you. Can you tap your brakes so I can get by?' When we sped past, they probably saw the huge antenna on my trunk and got really mad.

eta just noticed that.

See, I'm not a big speeder to begin with. The guy I was with did 90+ all the way across Texas... I was using it and still never really got much above 80 on TX's 75mph interstates.

I mean, what do you really save? Showing up 20 minutes early on a couple hour drive?

It's not a lazer detector, Chief. That's two different methods to measure your speed...

I have the passport max and really like it. Been using passports for years...they are not foolproof but have saved me from a ticket to pay for its self 10 times over.

If that doesnt work you need to know how to get them reduced to non moving violations so it doesnt jack up your insurance rates.

I got a warning once in Montgomery. We were driving from Birmingham down to Troy for a football game, and then on to stay at my parents that night. It was me, my wife, and daughter, and our two dogs. Plus a ton of luggage. The Montgomery PD has some BMW motorcycles and one of them got me on I-85 after I had been on there for a mile or two, after getting off of I-65. Apparently the speed limit is 50 for the first few miles before going back up to 60 and then 70. I'm still not sure why a 6-lane Interstate needs to be 50, but there are parts of Birmingham like that as well. So I'm going 70 and he pulls me over. The usual talk about why I pulled you over. I honestly didn't know it was for speeding. He asked me if my radar detector hadn't gone off, and kind of chuckled. I said yeah, it did, and I saw you. He gave me a warning and told me that this section was 50 mph and to slow it down.

They are illegal in some states. So there's that.

ETA: D.C. and Virginia are all I see.
