A slight spinoff from the "hate" thread...

Have you ever made a career move (not of your choice) that initially seemed terrible, but looking back, turned out to be excellent?

For me, getting laid off from my first IT job was the best move ever.

My career moves have never been dictated by another person, I made them all on my own accord.

Getting laid off, caught in a merger, having to take a job, promotion, or relo you didn't really want due to circumstances...

Or just taking a new job and realizing it was a mistake.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, those initial bad moves turned out to be really good moves.

Best career move in the history of history.

I always wonder if the majority of us who even know who she was if that didnt happen. Maybe just the girl Reggie Bush dated for awhile? Wouldnt that be awesome

I quit my last job without another job because it was an awful environment where I felt I was not doing a good job for my clients and the firm management was borderline unethical in its focus. Probably should have left a year earlier but I wanted to make sure I didn't end up in another situation I'd want to get out of.

Burned through some savings and got frustrated during my 2 month downtime, but now I'm in the best job I've ever had and practicing in an area I like better. It's not my dream job, but it's made life considerably more pleasant.

I think it has been a product of nobody else wanting to do the job, more than anything else.

I quit a cushy job as I approached thirty because I was bored -- my boss was a thousand miles away, I worked fifteen hours a week and was paid well to go through the motions. It seemed dumb to quit at the time; but I busted arse for a few years, and took much time off after that.

I don't think the method of severance is all that important. A change of scenery is almost always a good thing for well-adjusted people.

My last job was as a project engineer in the field. Good company; good pay. I needed a move, but it is hard to leave a good job.

Went with a new company 1.5 years ago and now do pure consulting. It's an office job and I rarely leave my desk, but I love it more than I thought I would.

Best move I ever made.

My current role is extraordinarily stressful, but I recently accepted an offer for another job within the company that is much easier and pays better. I only got the offer due to the experience in my current role. I knew that was my progression when I took my current role though, so it really doesn't count. Got to hit all the rungs when climbing the company ladder.

Not by my choice, but I got laid off from my first job out of college after 6 months due to cuts. I took a job at a real estate office and waited tables until I got a stable income and things have looked pretty bright since.

Yeah, when I was 19. Got fired from a part time job only to snag a better one. It gets better. I met my future wife there. 45 years later I'm still happily married.

Career wise I simply did a good job, was recognized for it, met some good people that put me on to some investments diversified those investments (remember the technology bubble? The easiest 1/2 mil I ever made), stayed at that same job until I retired at 54. Semi-retired I should say because I still handle most of the remaing investments personally. Life has been good to me. It would be better if the dumocraps and republicraps would keep their hands out of my proverbial pocket.

Quit my job with no backup.

Within 1 month had 3 different offers. Took the third offer. It's farther from home but much much better environment. Best decision I've ever made. In fact one of my biggest regrets is staying in the first job for way too long when it was such a negative environment. It wasn't until after I had my first child that it put things in perspective for me and I knew my time was much more valuable than that shite.

I had no idea how bad I needed a reset. I was going to change careers completely. Fed up.

Awesome. Same here.

I'm not sure a "dream job" exists. As long as I can be happy day-to-day and not question my entire existence...I'm good.

AR, I feel bad for people who really hate their job. You're gonna spend a lot of time at work, and while you may not love it, hating it would be hell.

I did the opposite. I made a career move 10 years ago that seemed like a gift from God at the time but in reality has fricked my entire life up.

Just got off deployment in 2003 and got a great job with the Air Force. Left everything in Huntsville, AL and moved to Shreveport for a high paying job.

10 years later I'm laid off and selling cars. FML.

Should have stayed.
