OT Mechanics-- Rear end of a 2004 Suburban

Seems the rear axle went bad on the suburban 200k miles. They want $3500.00 to replace. Does that sound right?

I has to do mine, but I think it was closer to $800-$900. The part wasn't too high, and it wasn't too long on the labor. Not sure how they get to $3,500.
Is that car worth it?

Is a 10 year old suburban even worth $2, 000?

He told me the part is $1800...

You might have to sell that car for scrap or parts. Not sure I'd fix it with 200k Miles for that price.

What is the part actually called? Rear axle Assembly?

Rear axle assembly. Select what options you have and look at them. They are all used though, and sometimes the prices are just retarded.
I just looked at rockauto and they have new ones from $1200-1800. You can probably find just the rear diff for $700, but labor will bring the cost up to the price of a whole new axle. You will also have all of the parts that come with a new axle if you buy the entire thing.
Eta: Any mechanic shop anywhere will have the ability to replace the entire rear end in a couple of hours.

Love it when dunderheads chime in on expenses to upkeep older vehicles vs. scrapping or replacing. Repair on this size vehicle, with its options is almost always a good decision. No rust? Still got my 99.

If you went to a mechanic shouldn't you know that?
What kind of a mechanic does not give you a printed estimate? Especially for that kind of price.
Get a second option, and look at getting a used part.

I'd hit the scrap yards and find one off a wrecked vehicle. There's gotta be tons of them out there.

Way to much money even to replace all parts in rear end. Take it elsewhere. GM service advisor for 10+ Years

You could do this in your drive way. look at a youtube vid and see if you can handle it.

If in Baton Rouge check Black's Auto across the river. They have a pretty big lot and sell used parts.

He's quoting you new parts, with a warranty.
If you're gonna trade it off soon, just put a used axle in it it then get rid of it.
If you plan to keep it, go new.

I mean the axle tubes snapped in half or what?
Many parts on a rear axle can be replaced without needing a whole assembly.

True, but labor eats you up.
Nobody pulls bearings anymore.

this.
A truck can last a long arse time. Take care of the engine and tranny and keep up with the fluids.
If it were me, I would go to a junk yard and pull a whole rear and swap mine out.
It's actually really really easy to swap out a solid rear axle.
wheels off
brakes off
shocks off
remove driveshaft.
remove rear end from leaf springs. Make sure you unhooked the brake lines and all other cords and lines there.
You will bleed the brakes on reinstall.
I would change the whole rear, brakes, diff, everything.

I called Hood Chevrolet in covington... dude didn't want to give much info at first. He finally said he'll call me in the morning with some pricing info.

I was lucky enough to breakdown a block from my house. Had it towed to the shop and gave me his price over the phone.
I've changed the oil every 3-5k miles and figure I can get another 75k on the engine at least. I worry about transmission though.
Does this effect the transmission? It grinded pretty good as my nose was stuck out in a hwy and needed to reverse a half a length of the truck. I can still put it in and out of gear but if I stick in gear the loud grinding starts.
ETA: I think the differential fluid all leaked out. There is a line of fluid on the road from my driveway to the subdivision entrance.

I could change it for around 1700 parts and labor used. Its a rear end, it's either good or bad.
