1st down, 2wr I formation set, run up the middle, gain of 3. 2nd down, jumbo set, run up the middle, gain of 2. 3rd down, QB draw, gain of 2. Why on the opening drive do we run plays that have no chance for success (success being defined here as getting a 1st down)? Many people wonder this. Gary Kasporov was a world champion chess player renowned for his unconventional opening moves. What is Miles philosophy behind the '3 & out' opening?

Punter needs a good warm up kick to keep him ready.

the philosophy is to wear people down with 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Neighbors and the tightends are zero threat to do anything productive (catch or even block)

Since I am watching Rocky, it's sort of like starting a boxing match dancing around the ring playing a bit of defense to see what the opponent is working with and throwing at you.

Like boxing, it's boring and frustrating. Unlike in boxing, it's useless.

You come out in base formations to see how the defense is going to line up and react to those formations and motions. The first few possessions are a game of chess.

I understand, sort of like the 'rope a dope' that Muhammed Ali use to utilize. Make them think you are weak, stupid, and retarded, then when you are way down, catch them with a surprise left hook, uppercut, and right cross for the victory. I think we came out of the rope-a-dope just a little to late. Didn't time it right.

See, that's where I was confused. I always thought it was about getting first downs and moving the ball down the field, and into the endzone.

We were Apollo Creed and State was Ivan Drago.

Miss St wasted no time in finding formations and plays that worked.

State didn't play chess. They just scored.

Miles philosophy has never been to come out and attack. He wants to feel the opponent out and see if he can win with that 1970's Michigan approach. Ever wonder why Miles has, by far, the best record for 4th quarter comebacks?
Necessity to open up and let the talent do what they do best.

I have supported Les the entire time he has been here, but man that game was fricking embarrassing. The fact that he does not adjust but continues to try and impose his will is a losing battle in today's college football. The run IS NOT going to dominate teams, especially with our offensive line, no matter how many great backs we have.

It seems like we never win the coin toss. Teams always defer to the 2nd half because they know that they will get the ball after we go 3 and out and burn maybe 2 and a half minutes off of the clock.

I don't get it. Why not test the secondary right from jump? They could do it in a two or one WR set.

Miles knew their weakness (come on the man is not retarded), he just refused to even test it.

well, interceptions do happen.

but I understand that when you run up the middle EVERY first series in a game the defense is gonna load up and crush it.

sometimes players are nervous that first series, rookie qb's esp.

I think Miles was overconfident in our D and thought we'd just be able to hold them and then wear them down on D to win a low scoring game. He talked a lot about the possibility of us being a dominant D this year after the two shutouts against Lollipop U and Little Debbie U. I was surprised at how bad our D looked against State, but I also knew that Sam Houston was Sam Houston and La Monroe was La Monroe.
