Does it show as a text from your actual cell # or do you get a random one?

its almost 2015 and the fact there's not a really simple solution to this is appalling.

E-mail is a really simple solution to this that works both on mobile devices and computers.

if (a) your parents have an email address and (b) they have it working on their phone and (c) they actually get notifications when email arrives and (d) they know how to reply to it and (e) they have a data plan and (f) the data signal is working where they are currently at and of course (g) they have a smart phone at all.
texting is about as technical as my parents get and i hate that i cant just zip off a text to them from my pc

What if you know someone's phone # but not their email? Stick to the question at hand. We all know how email works.

google voice works well. you set up a phone number or port your number to it. it's free.

I fail to see how this doesn't stick to the question at hand.
ETA: Works both ways, by the way. You can e-mail their phone # and it says who the text is from, though the number is weird. Then they can respond, and it goes straight to your e-mail.

It's really nice feature. I send out probably half of my texts from my Mac. Somebody texts me, it pops up on my computer, & I just type right back from the keyboard. Then of course it syncs with my texts on my phone.
