ESPN's Future Power Rankings

The Future Power Rankings are ESPN Insider's projection of the on-court success expected for each team in the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
quote:
HOW FUTURE POWER RATING IS DETERMINED
PLAYERS (worth 50 percent of score): Current players and their potential for the future, factoring in expected departures
MANAGEMENT (worth 16.7 percent of score): Quality and stability of front office, ownership, coaching
MONEY (worth 16.7 percent of score): Projected salary-cap situation; ability and willingness to exceed cap and pay luxury tax
MARKET (worth 8.3 percent of score): Appeal to future acquisitions based on team quality, franchise reputation, city's desirability as a destination, market size, taxes, business and entertainment opportunities, arena quality, fans
DRAFT (worth 8.3 percent of score): Future draft picks; draft positioning
1. San Antonio
2. Cleveland
3. OKC
4. Houston
5. LAC
6. Golden State
7. Chicago
8. Dallas
9. Miami
10. Portland
11. Toronto
12. Phoenix
13. New Orleans

The Pelicans are a case study in how the brilliance of one superstar talent can outweigh subpar decision-making and mediocre supporting talent. When you talk about the future of the NBA, the name Anthony Davis figures to be a central part of that reality, and as LeBron James starts the downhill portion of his career, Davis has a real shot to vie for the "Best Player on the Planet" title over the next three years as a two-way force.
Beyond Davis, the roster does not feature players with an opportunity for significant improvement other than point guard Jrue Holiday, who is only 24 years old and two years removed from an All-Star appearance. Ryan Anderson has been one of the best stretch 4s in the NBA, and the addition of Omer Asik should boost team defensive performance and alleviate some of the burden placed on Davis.
It goes downhill from there, for a variety of reasons. Asik's acquisition came at a very dear price (lightly protected first-rounder that will likely be conveyed this season, leaving New Orleans pick-less in 2015), and there's no long-term guarantee of his presence (his deal expires at year's end). Barring a major salary cap rise, the Pelicans figure to be over the cap until 2016 (although they are well below the luxury tax threshold), and traditionally, New Orleans has not been a desirable destination.
All of these factors influence the low management rating the Pelicans drew, as there still persists a perception that they haven't effectively managed their cap and pick inventory.
We are ranked 8th in "players." 13th overall. Not terrible.

The old arse spurs are the #1 future team?

top 4 don't bother me much, but LAC, especially CP3, will be getting kind of old by then. chicago's success rests on Rose's bum knee. miami….lol. who will they have then? interesting, and i don't think the Pels should be ranked higher than 10 based off how they are determining the rankings, but their top 10 is suspect with no Lakers or NY teams, especially since 50% is based off things other than current players.

They're certainly not going away anytime soon.

If "players" are the measure for that, a lot of them will be slowing down or retiring soon, like Duncan, Splitter, Parker, etc.
That "players" ranking would pretty much be based on the idea that Kawhi Leonard becomes a superstar.

The Lakers and Knicks get a bonus from "market" but take a hit from "draft" and the Lakers take a hit from "management" at the least since Jim Buss is a window-licking retard who traded all their assets for Nash and Howard, which didn't pan out then gave Kobe $20m+ a season on bum legs.
I won't knock the Knicks for management because I think Phil potentially turns them around.
Both teams are willing and able to pay the tax, but take a hit from being cap-limited for the near-future.

I think it's fair to believe that those guys won't get much better than what they already are.

3/4 of their best players are over 30.
I know we keep saying they are gonna drop off, but really i am just expecting them to die or something at this point.

How exactly is Ryan Anderson going to significantly improve his game? Grow longer arms? A late 20s boost in athleticism?

Since his cervical surgery, his 40 yd dash comes in at 4.5 and his vertical leap is at 48". Amazing.

They do have a really good young core though. I started following the team after moving here a couple months ago and their young talent surprised me.
Jimmy Butler, Tony Snell, and Taj Gibson will all play big roles this year. McDermott has big upside offensively as well

They'd still have his bird rights.
A late teens pick for a player of Asiks caliber is a no brainer.

This guy hasn't heard of the new TV deal? Or when EG is gone?

Because you dumb.

Plus the pick is protected, we might still keep it.

Have you ever heard of a player entering into the prime of his career? Ryno is 26 years old which I would consider entering his prime.
