if consumers of yelp don't like it, they don't have to use yelp. yelp isn't the only company offering that service

plus those advertising use their own tricks to get higher ratings #CAD

Consumer habits are not easily changed, and if yelp were to get in bed with say google then it will be even more difficult for consumers to find REAL reviews of businesses. But I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that you're okay with corporate misinformation and lies.

we didn't even have these services 10 years ago

google is a direct competitor with yelp, so i doubt this occurs...unless google buys yelp

i'm smart enough to know that ratings systems are mostly bullshite and have developed my own methods to try to use them

again, we didn't even HAVE this shite 10 years ago. the world can function without these services. if they become too unreliable, then i won't use them, or i will use the one that is the most reliable...or i will use my own methods

if i benefit because i'm able to see through the bullshite, then i get to live a more efficient life. others should be held to the same standard

yelp is awful. We all need to ignore & abandon it. It sin't crowd-sourced reviews, it is $-sourced reviews.

most of the sites that are popular and rely on reviews are infected by bots and spam reviews

the owner of the sites getting involved doesn't really offend my notions of justice of fair play

it was bullshite from the get go

Anyone who was using Yelp for anything other than addresses or phone numbers has my sympathy.

Similar to the Amazon reviews - some are verified purchases, others are not.

It's disappointing either way, but I've personally never used Yelp myself.

That's about all it's good for as most of the reviewers on there are total losers whose opinions on food I don't value.

Buddy of mine owns a restaurant and he says all of the Yelp reviews from his place are actual customers. I think it was Urbanspoon that called him soliciting advertising space on their site and basically told him if he bought space, his positive reviews would increase and if he didn't, his negative reviews would increase. He told them to f-off, and sure enough the few negative reviews he did have were pushed to the top of the page.

Agreed. They have a business practice I don't like, so I (the consumer) stop using them. Whats the problem?

And that's how the market works. Everyone figures out pretty quickly what to trust. Yelp isn't it.

How about people start asking real people, family and friends, what their experiences were with a certain company or place?

Where would this nation be if business wasn't allowed to be completely dishonest?
